In an underground music scene infatuated with the latest sound and the newest name making a splash, the influence and longevity of Detroit's Derrick May is startling. There is no debate: May is one of the storied pioneers of techno, a founding father of the Motor City sound that has had a profound and deep influence on the trajectory of electronic music. Week in and week out, May continues on his lifelong mission to spread his unique vision of real techno (High Tech Soul) to hungry audiences around the world.
May will be making a very special New York appearance on Saturday March 3rd, gracing the turntables of the Sullivan Room, on its brand-new Core Audio sound system for an extended set.
There will be a pre-party screening of "High Tech Soul", the 2006 documentary that takes a look at the roots of techno music alongside the cultural history of Detroit. The film is highlighted by interviews with May and his fellow members of the so-called "Belleville Three" - Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson - the trio of friends who together brought Detroit music to the forefront of the world's consciousness. Following the screening will be a Q&A with May and director Gary Bredow.
This is the New York launch party for "HI-TEK SOUL", Derrick's own ongoing event that has been staged at leading clubs around the world. This night is also the third anniversary party for Basic NYC, the Saturday night party helmed by DJs Sleepy & Boo that has presented New York with a remarkable array of underground dance music talent throughout its run. Both Basic NYC and HI-TEK SOUL have something in common - a dedicated belief in the spirit of music and its power to unite through the dancefloor.
