Panorama Bar's resident queen Cassy touches down in NYC as part of the Sunday School for Degenerates weekend. She's already a Sunday School veteran with her impressive, stunning closing set at P.S.102 [circa 2007]. We took a few moments to catch up with her on her previous excursions to the U.S., living and working in Berlin and why vinyl still rules.

Q&A with CASSY

You recently had your NYC debut (!) at Bar13 with the BlkMarket Membership crew back in May 2008. How was that and more importantly, what took so long to bring yourself over to NYC to DJ?

I had a really good time. It was lovely to play for these really supportive and cool promoters. It took me so long to come and play in the u.s. because I wanted to come and do it legally . and it takes time and lots of preparation to get a work visa done…

You also played the Movement 08 festival in Detroit over Memorial Day weekend. What are your impressions of this massive US festival?

It was the nicest festival I’ve been to. With a great mix of people. festival. And these people go there because of techno. So it’s a place where you can listen to an artist perform at his best, because he puts his heart and soul into it… it’s Detroit. This city means a lot to many electronic music musicians.

Last year in Miami, many of us got to hear you for the first time at the Sunday School for Degenerates party at Pawn Shop. Basically it was a who’s who of the global technorati and we thought your set was one of the best sets of the day. Now you’re returning to the first NYC edition. What is your take on the whole Sunday School for Degenerates vibe & programming?

First of all I think that Made Event's Mike and Laura are obviously promoters who don’t rest on their laurels. They really care about music not only parties and they care about the scene. They develop new ideas and try to deliver stuff for a smaller more underground audience. They work together with young and interesting artists and they listen to them… so of course how great that Made Event invited me the first time and now again.

You’ve been in Berlin since 2003. Now with the influx of artists flooding the city how has the city changed over the last 5 years?

Quite a bit. The city always changes. It’s a city under constant construction. More buildings or new buildings. New restaurants or clubs. There’s always something new to try and find out.

How’s your German?

I speak german, because I was raised in Austria. I went to a german speaking school…

In Berlin, is there a creative synergy amongst the Artists and community camaraderie or does it breed competition and elitist cliques?

It breeds all of that. What can I say… human nature. Of course there’s competition. But to me competition is something very positive. And elitist behavior well... Who cares... I guess everyone can be paranoid to a certain extent… I don’t know. Of course there’s always people one doesn’t like. I guess that’s the way it naturally is…

You’ve collaborated with Steve Bug and Ricardo Villalobos. What were those projects like and do you have plans to work with anybody else?

These projects were great and really interesting for me. It’s great to see other people work. Everyone’s so different. Everyone has a completely different approach… it’s really helpful to learn from others. Especially more experienced ‘others’…

And yes I have plans to work with other people in the future, but can’t tell you who… sorry… :)

Berlin’s Panorama Bar was recently voted ResidentAdvisor.net’s Best Club by its readers. How long have you been a resident? And as a resident there, what do you think makes it so special?

I guess because it feels like a contemporary club and because of the mix of people. No real age limit. The opening hours and the architecture…

It’s been reported that you only play vinyl - is this still the case and why?

Yes that’s true. Because I love the way it sounds and because I love playing records. I don’t really like computers and I can’t warm to CD players. Maybe one day I will have to, but until then I will continue playing records…

So you’re still pretty old school – we like that! Besides turntables then, what's your favorite piece of technology?

My machines… my 808 for example…

What is in the works for your solo project and your own “Cassy” label?

I can’t really tell. I have to finish things first in order to be able to tell what they mean or what they could be… so of course I will be working on lots and lots more music…
