Portraits: Danny Krivit @ 718 Sessions 6th Anniversary Party -Webster Hall October 19
by rhythmism
Thursday, Oct 16th 2008, 10:48 AMWe caught up with one of our own NYC living legends, Mr. Danny Krivit. With over 35+ years of DJing history in NYC, Danny has seen NYC clubbing through the good old days [Paradise Garage] and even some of its darker days (see Worst DJ Booth memory]. Danny is still on top with his soulful, classics 718 Sessions now celebrating its 6th year anniversary. The recent closing of Shelter is truly making 718 Sessions one of the last regular refuges for garage-heads. If you want a touch of nostalgia, a lesson in the old school, and just want to dance with abandon to house music then don't walk, RUN to the next 718 Sessions. This is the real New York house music.

Your NYC event:
718 Sessions 6th Anniversary Party @ Webster Hall - Sunday, October 19th
Favorite non-clubbing pastime in New York City:
Record shopping… complete vinyl junkie
Favorite NYC club (of all time):
Don’t shoot me, I know it's cliche, but hands down, Paradise Garage, I practically lived there for 10 years.
Favorite NYC eateries:
Great NY pizza is my weakness, there's a place on University Pl. called Stombolli’s, that I've been going to since 1966. But my current favorite is Pizza Uno on 12th St.
Best Summer '08 memory:
Touring in Japan with my fiancee, now wife, AK
Obsolete item you can't part with:
Reel to reel tape recorder. I did all my edits on it for 15 years, but for the last 10 years, most of my edits have been digital. I must admit, I've gotten a little spoiled with the convenience & accuracy of digital, but the reel is warmer & still has quite a mystique to it.
Clothing item you can't live without:
New Balance sneakers. Been wearing them since the early 80’s.
Favorite electronic gadget:
An electronic stylus cleaner. I vibrates very fine dust off a stylus.
Best recent gift:
My best man (Benny Soto) gave me a copy of the speech he made @ my wedding, that utilized the lyrics from a lot of our favorite songs… very special.
Biggest self-indulgence:
Record collecting. I guess I've always collected a lot of things, but mostly records, somewhere around 80,000 now.
Next big purchase:
Just got a new home that's being renovated & now I got to fill it up with stuff (other then records), it's a long list.
Who is your favorite DJ (Other than yourself)?
I like a lot of DJ’s for different reasons. My favorite kind of DJ takes you on a journey & tells a story with the music, but really that's not very common nowadays, most of these people are gone. There is one DJ in particular who's been a favorite of mine since the early 70’s. Who is still playing now… Tony Smith.
What you miss most about home when abroad:
Just about everything. I hate to be away from home for very long at all.
Your traveling routine on the plane:
Do my best to get in first to find a place for all my maxed out carry on luggage. Sometimes I can't avoid having to do a little work or knock out an edit. But for the most part, to cut down on all the jet lag, I try to get as much sleep as possible.
Indispensable travel item:
Water! I kind of lose it when it's not available.
Your daily routine:
Life seems a lot more complicated these days. I don't keep regular hours & when I get up, I try to catch up to as many things as I can.
Get a little food in me, but most of my day revolves around music, my wife Akemi & putting our new house in order.
Favorite touring memento:
A T-shirt from my favorite club in Japan, Precious Hall
Most cherished record:
It's really endless… but maybe a white label promo James Brown gave me back in the day of “Get On The Good Foot”.
Most important or unusual item on your rider:
Dimmers! Album jackets used to be enough for me to see in most any light, but they've gotten so generic & when it comes to reading what's on a CD, they don't make it very easy. The right light is crucial.
Worst DJ Booth moment:
Back in the day, after hour clubs in NYC could be a bit dangerous. I was a part owner & DJ at an after hours @ 99 Hudson St. in 1976. After a night of partying & dancing, some kids seemingly separate, come together by the end of the night & stuck up the place. Normally, a person with a gun has an agenda, which is bad enough, but kids with guns… very unpredictable & lot scarier. One of the kids put a gun in my mouth & said “go ahead, say something”. After 45 min. (seemed more like an eternity) they only got $40 from the group of us & finally left. But not before destroying my 1100A turntables by throwing them from the DJ both to the center of the dance floor.
Hardest thing about being a DJ:
Getting all the music you want. One thing I've learned is that the more you get, the more you realize you don't have. It's endless… but I love it.
What do you listen to when you're not working:
I generally prefer music with live musicians to drum machines. Something with a full composition that you can listen to from beginning to end. I generally lean towards funky & soulful.
Hobbies:
I guess I'm a chronic collector ever since I had a complete Mad Magazine collection as a kid. But these days records take up all my free time.
Personal hero:
Norman Harris, he put it all together.
Earliest musical inspiration:
It started with my mom & all the Jazz I would hear as a kid. But growing up in Greenwich Village in the 60’s I was completely surrounded by music, So it just kept seeping in gradually. But it was the introduction of Soul Train & NY radio station; WBLS really took it to the next level.
What did you want to be when you were a kid:
A musician. When I was 11, a friend of mine (Nile Rogers) helped me pick out a guitar & even taught me a few things to play, but it seemed like a lot of work. Playing records came a lot more naturally & won out.
Fictional character you identify with:
Gromit
One thing you should always do:
Enjoy life
One thing you should never do:
Dwell on the bad things
New for you in 2008:
Married life & a new home, followed by more edits & a 718 Sessions compilation.
