Q&A w/ Anané | Valentine's Day Blowout @ Pacha NYC - February 14th

Best of the '00s: Misstress Barbara | Sullivan Room - Saturday, February 6th

Misstress Barbara is an internationally renowned DJ who has spun at some of the world’s top clubs and worked alongside electronic music legends like Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin and John Digweed. Her DJing and production have earned her accolades and awards throughout the industry. She is still winning accolades from her huge 2009 artist album, I'm No Human. For I’m No Human, Misstress Barbara has drawn on her background in electronic music production, while infusing it with a new sensibility. Starting the songwriting process on piano and guitar inspired her to experiment with chord changes and overlay her minimalist beats with lush melodies. The album also finds her singing for the first time, and with her intoxicating space age femme fatale sound, it’s a happy development that was born out of unhappy circumstances. As a DJ, Barbara's sleek take on techno and tech-house always turns the dancefloor upside down. Misstress Barbara will return to New York City as Basic NYC brings her back to Sullivan Room on Saturday, February 6, 2010.

Unsound Festival Q&A w/ Mike Huckaby | The Bunker - Friday, February 12th

The main thing you need to know about Mike Huckaby is that he has impeccable taste and the ability to see past petty genre divisions to bring together amazing sets that may cover everything from the deepest house and the darkest techno to classic tracks from 20 years ago that you didn't even realize existed. These skills have landed him endless gigs worldwide at huge clubs, and make him an ideal DJ for the Unsound Festival New York dancefloor. Although his talents as a DJ are well documented, do not forget that he is also a very accomplished producer of dub techno and deep house, with tracks on his own Deep Transportation and S Y N T H labels, as well as the Berlin-based Cache imprint. Mike will be part of an all star lineup on Friday, February 12, 2010 at The Bunker. He will be playing alongisde [a:rpia:r]'s Petre Inspirescu, Anthony "Shake" Shakir, DJ QU, Barbara Preisinger, and Eric Cloutier.

Unsound Festival Q&A w/ Mike Servito | Kiss & Tell Closing Party - February 14th

Mike Servito is a DJ’s DJ — a lifelong music fanatic with a truly unique ability to move a dance floor. Fearless in his seamless transitions from one style to another, Servito has an unpredictability and a deep trust in his music knowledge that has garnered him a cult following and made him an in-demand DJ the world over. Although Servito is a NYC transplant, his DJ style is unmistakably Detroit. Inspired by Detroit radio of the ‘80s and the city’s local DJs in the ‘90s, Servito came of age in a flourishing electronic music scene, making his debut in 1995 and immediately gaining the attention and respect of his peers and local techno heroes. Servito redefined himself in 2002, finding inspiration in the new generation of electronic-music producers and DJs. He was among the original UNTITLED residents, whose ranks include Matthew Dear, Derek Plaslaiko, Tadd Mullinix, and Ryan Elliott. On Sunday, February 14, 2010, Mike will be headlining the official closing party of the Unsound Festival along with some very special surprise guests. The special Kiss & Tell Queen of Hearts Valentines Party will be held at Brooklyn's Rose Bar.

Unsound Festival Q&A w/ FaltyDL | The Bunker - Saturday, February 13

Raised in New Haven, Connecticut, Drew Lustman aka FaltyDL was originally influenced by acts such as Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. His musical aspirations began in high school while playing the upright and electric bass in the jazz quartet, Luggage. Upon moving to Manhattan, Lustman began attending dubstep nights and found further inspiration in jungle, disco, along with New York garage and house. After his jungle inspired releases on Berkley-based Unfun records in 2007, Lustman sent countless ‘crazy jungle’ demos to Mike Paradinas, head of Planet Mu. He finally struck gold when Paradinas picked up the first track of his debut album, Human Meadow. His much acclaimed experimental-dubstep album Love is a Liability was released last year. Falty DL will be performing at one of the premier events of the New York edition of the Unsound Festival. He will be part of a massive line up of cutting edge artists in the fields of techno, dubstep, garage, and house and bring his unique take on dubstep to The Bunker on Saturday, February 13, 2010.

Best of the '00s: Oliver Huntemann | Immerse 09 @ Cielo - Feb 4th, 2010

Oliver Huntemann has been there since the beginning. Like so many of his colleagues, his route to techno took a tour through electro and rave and began with the formation of the quintessential early 90s dance act Humate. He is capable of telling the usual veteran tales regarding influences, first record purchases, or the "good old days". Been there, done that! However, it has proved much more difficult to just maintaine a low profile. Since 2009 Huntemann has been running the Ideal Audio label. A new chapter after more than fifteen years at Confused Recordings plus a slew of sub and sister labels. Having released numerous 12 inches and almost as many remixes (for the likes of Underworld, Chemical Brothers and Depeche Mode, just to name just a few), he also released his third album, “H-3“ to critical acclaim. With so much fame on his plate, he has done remarkably well to stay out of the spotlight. On February 4, 2010 Oliver Huntemann will no longer be out of the New York City spotlight as Immerse brings him to Cielo for his New York debut. This will be an extra special night as Oliver will be recording the third edition of his PLAY mix series. With succesful editions coming from The Edge (Sao Paulo) and Rex Club (Paris) it only seems appropriate that Cielo plays host to the latest incarnation of the series. Playing alongside Oliver will be New York favorites and Basic NYC founders Sleepy & Boo.

Best of the '00s: Ryan Crosson | Blk|Market Membership New Years Eve

By rhythmism - Monday, Dec 28th 2009, 04:31 PM

Best of the '00s: Ryan Crosson | Blk|Market Membership New Years Eve

Ryan Crosson crafts techno and house tied to the historical precedent set in his native city of Detroit and his adopted hometown of Germany. Situated loosely between these two organizing poles, as are many of his American peers currently living in Berlin, Crosson stands out in two respects: delivering a fetishistic attention to programming and sound design, and embodying a ceaseless energy that carries itself from the studio directly into his live set and DJ performances. Ryan consistently chooses to steer away from the predictable circuit of so-called “underground” club hits, instead favoring a process of constant renewal and return both to early influential material and to emerging sounds that depart from hegemonic trends. Likewise, Crosson’s production and sampling practices consistently depart from the world of electronic music by accessing histories of sound linked to militant black jazz, proto-disco, fusion, and west african indigenous music. After releasing material on labels like m-nus, Telegraph, Trapez, and Wagon Repair, Crosson has fully given himself over to a life of touring and performance. Moving to Berlin has opened up residencies for at Alte Borse in Zurich, Arena Club in Berlin, and of course the notorious summer weekly party, Soulshower, at Club Der Visionaere. On New Years Eve Blk|Market Membership brings Ryan to New York City for a special tag team set with his friend Shaun Reeves. They will be playing alongside an all star lineup featuring the U.S. debut of DJ Koze, who will be playing an extended 5 hour set, Markus Fix, and a special closing set by Three.

Best of the '00s: Above & Beyond

By rhythmism - Monday, Dec 21st 2009, 03:52 PM

Best of the '00s: Above & Beyond

There are trance DJs who can rock a party, a club, a festival. And there are acts that can write songs that will bring out the goose bumps in you. But there’s only one band that can do both: Above & Beyond. This three piece have remixed Madonna, won Essential Mix of the Year, and played to one million people in Rio de Janeiro. More importantly they’ve written songs with the power and the melody to en-trance that one million-strong crowd, many of who were singing along, word for word. Above & Beyond make music, pure and simple. That music happens to be electronic. And it connects. This makes Above & Beyond unique, not just in trance, but in popular music as well. From club gigs in Eastern Europe to major festivals like Coachella in California, Above & Beyond have the ability to entrance audiences. Their music has grandeur and melody, but it’s edged with steel too. And it’s bigger than any genre. Trance is too small a word for what they do. Yet Above & Beyond aren’t just consummate musicians and songwriters, they are also world class DJs. Their Trance Around The World radio show airs on over 15 FM, Internet and Satellite stations worldwide. In 2004 they won Essential Mix of the Year, proving just how deftly they navigate the full spectrum of melodic dance music, with sets that cross genres with ease and that encompass the trancier side of house, progressive and techno. And each year they rise inexorably higher in the prestigious DJ Magazine poll: from #39 to #19, from #9 to their current placing at #3.

Best of the '00s: Sam Valenti IV (Ghostly International)

Best of the '00s: Sam Valenti IV (Ghostly International)

Sam Valenti IV is the founder of Ghostly International, home to two of America’s finest independent record labels, Ghostly and Spectral Sound. Valenti grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, fascinated by the city’s musical transition from Motown to techno. He picked up his first pair of decks at the age of 15, adopted the moniker DJ Spaceghost, and began tutelage under some of D-town’s most respected DJs. At the age of 19, Valenti noticed a distinct lack of options for American electronic music, and began envisioning a genre-less label that would respect the freedom and intellect of both its audience and its artists. Recruiting a team of musicians and visual artists who explored the fringes of experimental pop and dance music, the Michigan-based company has carefully built a reputation for artistic quality and innovation since its inception in 1999. Today, Valenti’s Ghostly International label is a unique force in American independent music, balanced carefully between pop culture, leftfield experimentation, and studied artistic tradition.

Best of the '00s: Taimur Agha (Blk|market Membership) | New Year's Eve & B Day Bash

One of NYC’s most active tech-house DJs and promoters, Taimur Agha is a major force shaping the scene. It is not uncommon to witness his tireless efforts in making his party’s vibe one of the most talked about in the U.S. Whether it be a widely known artist, or someone he is introducing you to for the first time, he is sure to please. His deep DJ sets are a late night staple in NYC’s underground. His extensive knowledge of music is displayed in all of his sets. Although you can hear influences from the many artists that Taimur has worked with, it is obvious that he has shaped his own sound with quite the flair over the past years. You can catch Taimur opening, headlining, and closing many of the best parties around the US. With partner Fahad, he has helmed the Blk|market Membership parties, producing over 100 events that have hosted some of techno’s biggest names and brightest up-and-comers at locales like LOVE, Cielo, Bar 13, and the infamous secret location over the past few years. This tradition continues with the next two Blk|market Membership events. First, on New Years Eve Blk|Market welcomes DJ Koze to New York and the U.S for the first time for an exclusive extended 5 hour set. He will be playing alongside Markus Fix and Shaun Reeves vs. Ryan Crosson. Plenty of Surprises are sure to be in store for what Ibiza-Voice (http://www.ibiza-voice.com/story/news/2113) named NYC's best New Years Eve party. Then on January 16, 2010 Blk|Market Membership celebrates Taimur's Birthday with another all star lineup featuring Margaret Dygas, Will Saul, Anthony Collins, Matt Tolfrey, a live performance from Crazy Larry, and an opening set from Maher Daniel.

Best of the '00s: Steve Lawler | The BPM Festival January 1st -10th, 2010

Forward thinking, groundbreaking, precedent setting: not just the true essence of progression, but an apt way to descibe world renowned DJ/producer Steve Lawler. That’s progression, not to be mistaken with the term progressive, music Steve Lawler’s often been associated with. Lawler is much more than a progressive house DJ. A child of the acid house generation, he’s been busy with the beats long before genres were but a twinkle in clubland’s eye. VIVA Music, Steve’s label, has been key to this progression. The VIVA brand works as a culmination of everything that’s come before; illegal raves, to his residency at super club Cream or his Ibizan schooling. He’s remixed high profile artists and worked with world renowned imprints. He’s released some of the scene’s most collectible mix series such as the ‘Dark Drums’ ‘Lights Out’ and,‘VIVA’. Steve’s seen it all and experienced everything club culture can throw at him and its this experience that has fine-tuned his understanding of electronic music and its relationship with the dancefloor. Steve Lawler will bring his unmistakable sound to the shores of Playa Del Carmen for the third year in a row at the 3rd Annual BPM Festival. The Festival is held from January 1-10, 2010 and with a stellar line-up of over 70+ globally renowned DJs, BPM will surely have something to offer for every electronic music aficionado.

Best of the '00s: Justin Carter | Mister Saturday Night New Years Eve w/ John Tejada

Justin Carter was raised on Nickelodeon and Nintendo. This developed (or undeveloped as it were) his attention span, which affords him the ability to float through numerous interests in his life. He is a writer, a DJ, a foodie, a museum and theater enthusiast, a producer of events, and one of two brains behind New Release with Eamon Harkin. A member of the Nublu family, Justin launched the much-loved Lower East Side musical institution’s record label. He held the Music Director position at Manhattan’s hallowed music venue APT for two years; and he is a music director and weekly resident at outdoor parties The Beach Party and Sunday Best, both well known summer institutions in New York City. As a DJ he’s played alongside Moodymann, David Byrne, Nicky Siano and Larry Heard at events ranging from underground loft parties—like his semi-regular, semi-secret Easy Lover loft with DJ Probus—to large live music and DJ events--like Mister Saturday Night, an event that brings the best of live and DJed music together at venues around New York. This month Justin Carter takes to the Mister Saturday Night decks twice with some very special guests. On Saturday, December 12 he will be playing alongside Eamon Harkin and very special guest John Tejada. And on December 31, the two bring a special New Years Eve edition of Mister Saturday Night with special guest Omar S.
