Best of the '00s: Misstress Barbara | Sullivan Room - Saturday, February 6th
by rhythmism
Monday, Feb 1st 2010, 02:31 PMMisstress Barbara is an internationally renowned DJ who has spun at some of the world’s top clubs and worked alongside electronic music legends like Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin and John Digweed. Her DJing and production have earned her accolades and awards throughout the industry. She is still winning accolades from her huge 2009 artist album, I'm No Human. For I’m No Human, Misstress Barbara has drawn on her background in electronic music production, while infusing it with a new sensibility. Starting the songwriting process on piano and guitar inspired her to experiment with chord changes and overlay her minimalist beats with lush melodies. The album also finds her singing for the first time, and with her intoxicating space age femme fatale sound, it’s a happy development that was born out of unhappy circumstances. As a DJ, Barbara's sleek take on techno and tech-house always turns the dancefloor upside down. Misstress Barbara will return to New York City as Basic NYC brings her back to Sullivan Room on Saturday, February 6, 2010.

Best clubbing trend of the 00s
The mix up of music styles in the middle of the decade that finally allowed DJs to play a bit of everything again... like in the 90's!
Worst clubbing trend of the 00s
Silicone!
Best track of the 00s
Never mind, this is an impossible question to answer! A best track per year, OK. But per decade? No way.
Best summertime anthem
"Beat That Bird" by Justin Martin & Claude Von Stroke
Best NYC clubbing moment of the ‘00s
The Tronic Treatment nights back in 2002 at Sullivan Room!
Album of the decade
"Felt Mountain" by Goldfrapp.
Best Producer
Apparat
Best Global Club
Pacha Buenos Aires.
Best U.S. Club
Cielo, NYC, for the sound and the way it looks, and the size of the room is just perfect. Although unfortunately it has changed over the years, the club remains an amazing one.
Best Festival
Piknic Electronik in Montreal!
Best Record Label
I don't have one.
Most embarrassing club moment
A long time ago, when I removed the wrong vinyl on the decks.... the one playing!!
Best fan moment
I have more than one. In the Dominican Republic, or in Montreal, or in Spain, when I get to gigs and my fans have huge banners or cardboard signs with my name on it. When the entire club starts singing happy birthday to me. Moments like those.
Best DJ software
I don't use any.
Best studio software
My MAC with all that's in it!
Best or Worst piece of gear that changed DJing forever
The arrival of CDJs and digital technology....I love my vinyl
Best “One More Tune” (encore) track
"Total Departure" by Smith & Selway
Best clubbing destination
In general, of course Ibiza is the capital, but personally my travel destinations are never for clubbing, so Ibiza is the last place on earth I would go for any vacation. But I'd be lying if I said Ibiza isn't the best place (in the summer) to hear nearly every relevant DJ on the planet.
Best Airport
Barcelona
Best Airline
Singapore Airlines
Best Hotel
Omm, in Barcelona
Best After-Party
Sunday School for Degenerates, WMC Miami
Highlight of 2009
The release of my new Artist Project "I'M NO HUMAN"
Lowlight of 2009
Switching to playing more and more CD's. No one sends vinyl promos anymore! By the time vinyl comes out, the tracks are not as new.
New Year’s Resolution
Exercise every day and practice my voice and guitar every day!
Clubbing predictions for 2010 and beyond
It's changing, not for the best. The magic years are over. But hopefully things will start to change for the better.
Plans for 2010
Release "I'M NO HUMAN" outside Canada and write more new music.
