Popof's recent rise through the ranks of electronic music has been the type of rapid assent most DJs only dream of. After catching his big break in 2007, when Thomas Heckmann released the young artist's now classic single "Alcoolic" on his A.F.U. imprint, the French producer has sowed the seeds of his minimal techno/electro sound across Europe, and around the globe, provide a refreshing take on the two genres, both with his productions and DJ sets. Now he gets set for his U.S. debut!

Back in 2006 there was a little track which made its way through clubland called "Put Your Hand Up For Detroit" from a young Dutch producer named Fedde le Grand. The track exploded to #1 positions in multiple countries, as well as receiving "Best Underground Club Track" awards from IDMA and CWA, also providing Fedde with the IDMA for "Best Breakthrough DJ". This track was a not so humble introduction to the world of jet setting DJ status which has seen Fedde steadily grow to one of the premier DJs in the game. His debut album Output hit 60 countries last year and went on to include a slew of successful singles including the massive "Back & Forth". He has collaborated with superstars Madonna and Will.i.am and is set to go into the studio with the likes of Tiesto and Mark Knight, amongst others. He is also the head of the acclaimed Flamingo Recordings which boasts a slew of production material, as well as some of the best club nights around the world. Always keeping busy, Fedde has just released his latest club banger "Rockin High" featuring remixes from superstars David Guetta and Laidback Luke and is in the middle of another packed festival season bringing him to events around the globe. In September, his busy schedule brings him back to New York City where he will be making a Main Stage appearance at Electric Zoo on Sunday, September 5th.

Opulent, cinematic, and seductively moody, the music of London’s Jon Hopkins combines the ethereal scales of Brian Eno’s ambient adventures with dark, cushioned rhythms reminiscent of Boards of Canada. A composer and pianist who taught himself the tricks of the contemporary home studio, he released his first album, Opalescent, in 2001, and has since released two more, the latest being 2008’s Insides. That album elevated Hopkins’ status among the electronic cognoscenti, eventually earning him a place on major indie label Domino Records. A rarity among modern electronic composers, Hopkins has an uncanny ability to locate and fully develop the emotional core of his composition, lending his work a transcendental and often moving feel. Such is the pull of Hopkins’ music that Coldplay used his track “Light Through the Veins” to bookend their 2008 album Viva La Vida, and the British composer went on to spend six months with the band on the road. Jon Hopkins will be playing at Mutek 2010 in Montreal and Electric Zoo on New York's Randalls Island Park.

Since 2005, Michael Pettit and Jamie Drouin have been casting an atmospheric haze of deep, minimal techno over their hometown of Victoria, British Columbia. As Overcast Sound, fragments of field recordings mingle with cinematic sweeps and a dub undertow. Pettit combines his background in techno with Drouin’s sound-art practice, creating a signature that recalls the dub-techno excursions found on the Echochord label. Drouin is no stranger to MUTEK, having contributed to a project by audio-visual duo Skoltz_Kolgen, as well as the Placard headphone extravaganza from 2007. Like his other sound works, there’s an emphasis on the way audio can shift senses of place, space and time. The duo’s improvised performances and re-imaginings of their compositions are accentuated with an evocative visual presentation.

Born in New York, Nicolas Jaar was raised in Santiago before returning to America where he began his production life at the very tender age of 14. Debuting his tracks at age 17, Jaar – who is now 20 – continues to cause a sensation with his cascading piano lines, folk leaning melodies, cool vocals and deep house undertow. Turned on by equal parts afro-beat, Satie and Villalobos, Jaar’s tracks have appeared on Wolf + Lamb, Circus Company and his own label, Clown and Sunset. His latest releases include the EPs, A Time For Us and Russian Dolls.

The Baltimore-based duo of Drew Daniel and Martin Schmidt, who have been recording together as Matmos since 1997, are electronic collage artists with a unique sense of humor and artistry. Their recording techniques may hearken back to the musique concrète of Steve Reich and Luc Ferrari, but their playfulness of rhythm and selections of field recordings inject a dose of contemporary real-world dynamism into their music. Conceptualists on par with sample guru Matthew Herbert, Matmos have spent eight albums crafting pop abstractions from sources as unlikely as clipped hair and body fat left over from plastic surgery. Arguably breaking through at the start of the decade with their memorable MUTEK 2001 performance, the duo return to festival stages after a decade’s absence to showcase just how far they’ve come since then. In between, they have toured extensively with Bjork – a longtime fan of the group – and even produced portions of her albums Vespertine and Medúlla, both of which bear significant signs of the duo’s conceptual influence. Always ones to flip the script, their latest album, 2008’s Supreme Balloon, abandons microphones and recorded music altogether and opts for purely electronic tones as its source material.

Martin Buttrich is famously as fluent behind a mixing console as in front of a virtual drum kit. That technical prowess, combined with a fascination for music of every shape, has resulted in outstanding releases on influential labels such as Planet E, Four:Twenty, Cocoon, Poker Flat, Nervous and Desolat. He's also put his sonic thumbprint on many big ticket artists, notably receiving a Grammy nomination for a Tori Amos remix in 2003 and more recently remixing Tracey Thorne to wide acclaim. Such diverse musical horizons are rare. While other prolific artists may have slowly watered down their music, Buttrich's star has risen in diametric opposition. His vision has become more and more condensed, more and more crystallized. Flipping and puncturing grooves in a live setting is a snap for him, and he's entranced audiences at festivals like Time Warp and Creamfields and at temples of boom such as Fabric (London), Womb (Tokyo), Cocoon (Frankfurt), Panorama Bar (Berlin) and Amnesia (Ibiza). Martin has just released his debut solo album Crash Test on Desolat, a project fusing wild imagination with solid musical architecture, cherry-picked inspiration with true perfection of his musical craft. Built the old-fashioned way - through dedication, driven by passion. Martin Buttrich can be seen on the Beatport stage at Movement 2010 in Detroit's Hart Plaza over Memorial Day weekend, May 29-31, 2010.

In the early nineties, the brothers' Hawtin made regular excursions from their home town of Windsor into the Detroit underground, experiencing the noisy birth of techno in it’s purest form. One brother’s subsequent journey has been well documented; the other’s remains slightly more obscure. Fast forward almost two decades to 2010 and the time is right to hear Matthew Hawtin’s story. Between 1993 and 1998, Matthew was a regular DJ at Detroit parties like Hardest, Spastik and Heaven and Hell but for him, ambient music offered the more emotional, thoughtful and evocative experience. He was also involved with Plus8 during the label’s formative years while simultaneously studying Fine Art in Toronto, developing an approach that reflected both the musical and physical environment in which he was immersed. He used to share studio space with Richie, so the repetitive beats that hammered through the wall were interpreted as repetitive forms, subtle sounds and textures transformed into varying colors and surfaces, and the overall layering of sound developed into a layering of different disciplines; his work ultimately becoming an amalgamation of art, architecture and design. Matthew will be playing the Vitamin Water Stage at Movement 2010 in Detroit's Hart Plaza over Memorial Day Weekend, May 29-31, 2010 .

Barem perfectly personifies the new breed of electronic musician who has grown up in the digital age, using intuitive software programs like Reason and Ableton to spontaneously express ideas and emotions. He released his Kleine EP on the free net label Unfoundsound in 2005 not really knowing what to expect but something clicked and it grabbing the attention of many well known techno DJs. He soon made the step up to Foundsound (Unfoundsound's parent label) and released his first vinyl EP Campo Madness in 2006 consolidating his position as a fresh, emerging talent. In 2007, Barem released his superb debut EP for Minus Never Better Than Late which cemented his strong personal and artistic connection with the label, representing another major achievement in his short but intense journey so far. His style features subtle percussive elements that skip and snake through, while distant, sometimes eerie melodies often occur on a random, secondary level. For Barem, the bottom line is to keep things simple and stay true to the old school minimalist approach that first got him hooked. You can see Barem play two special dates this month. First, Made Event brings him to Cielo alongside Paco Osuna on Friday, May 28. Then he will be on the Movement Torino stage at Movement 2010 held in Detroit's Hart Plaza over Memorial Day Weekend, May 29-31,2010.

By now you've heard about the Martinez Brothers. These guys are practically the definition of new blood. Music always played a significant role in the Martinez home: the boys grew up playing a variety of instruments—keyboards, bass, and mainly drums and percussion. They'd play in church, at home, in various bands around the Bronx. It was their father, a veteran of disco-era clubs like the Paradise Garage, that turned them on to disco and house, via radio programs like Timmy Regisford's Kiss FM show and CDs that he'd bring home in an attempt to expand the boys' musical worldview. At such a young age, the duo have a list of accolades that many in their field would be envious of. From dates around the world, successful releases, including their follow up EP to the smash "Debbie Downer" entitled Don't No Yet on Dennis Ferrer's Objektivity label, The Martinez Brothers are the new breed of DJ poised to remain relevant for years to come. Catch the duo on the Beatport stage at Movement 2010 to be held in Detroit's Hart Plaza over Memorial Day Weekend, May 29-31, 2010.

While Cassy has achieved much as an electronic music DJ and producer, her achievements alone do not reveal the depth of her artistry. Cassy has a mystique that tends to captivate and intrigue the attentive listener or observer. When playing a set, she exudes an aura of serenity and passion for what she's doing. Been there, done that, does not even begin to describe the life and musical career of the living legend, François Kevorkian, aka François k. We are talking about someone that was there from the early days of disco, to the birth of house music, living it and creating it. François at one point in the 80's had to take a leave of absence from DJing because his studio work was in such high demand. Vinyl was not the only thing François was mixing in his career, he also mixed albums, namely Depeche Mode's best selling album Violator and Kraftwerk's studio album Electric Cafe. When François is not touring the world during festival season, you can catch him right here in New York at Deep Space Mondays (http://www.deepspacenyc.com/) at Cielo for the legendary, award-winning dub night. Created as a welcoming an open atmosphere for those who appreciate music and dub, Deep Space has no dress code or door policy. François has also been nominated for 'Best Resident DJ" for the Club World Awards (http://www.clubworldawards.com/) for his Deep Space night, an award he has won two previous years.
