World's largest electronic music parade comes to San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO — The world's largest electronic music festival and parade is coming to San Francisco on October 2, 2004. First held in Berlin in 1989, Loveparade San Francisco is expected to draw thousands of revelers to the Bay Area for a celebration of electronic music with a mission of fostering tolerance, respect and understanding between nations.

San Francisco has long been a desired location for huge, outdoor, eclectic events, including the worlds' largest Gay pride celebration and the famous Castro Halloween and Folsom Street Fair parties. Loveparade promises to be an event of the same caliber, drawing a colorful and diverse audience while increasing the existing tourist draw to the city.

This is the first time Loveparade has been held in the United States; similar events are regularly held in other cities around the globe, including Mexico City, Cape Town, and Tel Aviv.

The event has garnered excitement from the business community and beyond. California Assemblymember Mark Leno was among those to recently offer his congratulations on the city's acquisition of the parade, calling it a "momentous and historic" celebration. "I commend your commitment to create an international community where music, dance, love and diversity can creatively flourish."

International DJ/Producer Paul Van Dyk stated, "I was very excited when I heard that the Loveparade will take place in North America for the first time. I am sure that the positive and peaceful vibe of this event will be an extra feature in the amazing cultural life of San Francisco and is going to become an annual highlight."

The Loveparade will begin along San Francisco's scenic Embarcadero and make its way through the South of Market area. It will end along the waterfront in the newly redeveloped Mission Bay district with a daylong celebration featuring music, dancers, and a variety of vendor booths. Top local and international DJs will also be featured at the waterfront festival, as well as on the floats as they make their way along the parade route.

Mission of Loveparade San Francisco

SEPTEMBER 2004 UPDATE

San Francisco - The world's largest electronic music festival is coming to San Francisco this weekend, Saturday, October 2nd, 2004. San Francisco's newest party is already promising to be a "can't miss" event, with 29 float collectives coming from throughout the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Sacramento, New York, Chicago, Denver, Europe and Mexico. There are already over 200 DJs from around the world scheduled to spin house, techno, trance, new school breaks, drum and bass, jungle, and underground hip hop at the event, including some of the most renowned names in the business.

Unlike any parade the City has seen, the Loveparade is a "no spectators" event, with revelers encouraged to dress outrageously and dance alongside floats for the entire length of the route. Founded in Berlin in 1989 by DJ/producer Dr. Motte, the Loveparade is world-famous for its celebration of diversity, its promotion of tolerance, and its fostering of community - a perfect fit for the City of San Francisco.

The City in turn has been a fantastic host, with support coming from California State Assembly member Mark Leno, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the Entertainment Commission, the Port of San Francisco, Department of Parking and Traffic, and the San Francisco Police Department. With visitors pouring in from around the world to attend the event as well as the pre- and after-parties throughout the weekend, the Loveparade promises to have a positive financial impact on the City and its businesses.

A press conference is scheduled for 5:30 PM on October 2, 2004 at Loveparade Command Central (Jelly's Cafe, 295 Terry A. Francois Boulevard), where organizers will be presented with a proclamation from the California State Assembly. Loveparade San Francisco President Joshua Smith, delegates from Loveparade Berlin and Loveparade Mexico, and headlining DJs will all be on hand and available to the press for interviews at this scheduled time.

San Francisco's Loveparade kicks off on Saturday, October 2nd at 1 PM at Beale and Folsom Streets, heads south along the Embarcadero, and culminates in an all-day festival at Terry A. Francois Boulevard in Mission Bay. Loveparade San Francisco is a free event, with a $5 suggested donation for entry to the festival grounds.

Not so suprising. SF has a long history of social activism, hippiedom and nightlife proponents. Plus, the large gay community there and the fact that the city is also the hub of Burning Man planning and activities.

Many of the planners and organizers are also involved in the annual gay pride parade. I believe it's the largest in the nation.
