cancelled..... :(

NYC DECOM 2004...
THE SIDEBURN AT CONEY ISLAND!!!

CANCELLED

During the past 48 hours, things beyond our control have changed for the worse and we regret to inform you that we have been forced to cancel the event to be held Saturday Nov. 13th 2004 at Coney Island, titled "Sideburn". The reason for this cancellation is simple. Due to local Community Board and police agreements changing in the last 48 hours, it is impossible to throw an event that conforms to the requirements the Burningman Project has for any event that uses the name Burningman or Decompression.

To further explain, the venue in Coney Island was considered a viable location only after we received community board approval to use the private street behind the venue known as Bowery. It is a private street owned by the merchants who own the businesses there. Once that was secured, we moved forward. In the last 48 hours the agreement was changed such that we would only be allowed use of the street until 8pm. Furthermore, no fire spinning, alcohol, outdoor tents, sculpture, heaters or firebarrels. As a last resort we tried renting the 24,000sqft lot next door, but the fee was too much for our budget. That decision effectively cut off use of the outdoors for anything more than smoking and made the only location for the event a one room dance club with a Certificate of Occupancy of roughly 500 people.

Many of us were organizers of the NYC 2002 Decom at the Lunatarium. That was so successful that we had people waiting in line for over an hour to get into a space that was 6 times larger than this one. We do not want to put anyone through that again and we don't want to limit attendance.

People who have already purchased tickets will be reimbursed by Friday.

Again, we regret this late announcement, but there are some things we just can't control. For those who are already committed to being in town that day, there are a number of events that are most definitely going to be interesting. For those of you jonesing for a chance to hang with your Burningman Peeps, there is always Astral Slide on December 5th. We wish them the best of luck and are looking forward to helping out in any way we can.

Sincerely,
The "Sideburn" 2004 Committee
