crobar invites you to Release Yourself, at the monthly residency of one of the world’s foremost DJs, Roger Sanchez. The name, Release Yourself, comes from his set of albums, titled Release Yourself 1, 2, and 3, which he released off of his own label, Narcotic. Sanchez has been playing house music for 20 years, first taking to the decks at the tender age of 13. His name is synonymous with quality, and he’s spent his life perfecting the art of spinning and remixing, getting his deep understanding of techno, tribal and house music down to a science.
“To me, spinning records can be just as creative as producing and re-mixing,” he says. “A great DJ can take a record and give it an entirely new sound or vibe by the way they deal with the beats or the chord progressions.”
Roger’s tough underground grooves changed the house scene in New York and around the world. He has traveled around the world delivering his brand of driving house anthems scattered with bits of techno and breaks. Aside from Crobar, he has a bi-monthly residency at Stereo in Montreal, and has also held a residency at Pacha in Ibiza for three years running. He has remixed songs for Babyface, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Janet Jackson, Basia, and Soul 2 Soul; as well as remixing Bassement Jaxx’s famed, “Rendez Vous,” (on Release Yourself 3), and recently remixing a song for Cirque du Soliel. In 2003, after being nominated a number of times, his remix of No Doubt’s “Hella Good” finally earned him a coveted Grammy.
His position in the club community has been forged with hard work and immeasurable talent, and he has no plans of slowing down. The sets he’ll play at Crobar will continue to reinforce his presence as one of the innovators and perpetuators of all that is amazing about electronic music. He’s a New York native, and his fan base in his home town is loyal and vivacious, creating magical nights that are energized and fun, and Crobar is the perfect club to set it all off.
He has always been known to take his time when producing music, and now after 20 years of practicing playing live, this is the pinnacle of years of hard work. He has perfected an art, and has the energy and the heart to back it. Since starting the residency in October 2004, every time he has played the room, the dance floor explodes happy dancing club-goers who move to his beat with their hands pumping wildly in the air, with an overwhelming positive vibe from the DJ booth to the dancefloor.
