View Full Version : How the hell do you pronounce this DJ's name? James Zabiela

I have heard it pronounced literally hundreds of ways. If taken phonetically, it should be pronounced "za-bee-eh-la" with a soft transition between the dipthong "ie". But Pete Tong (who would know) pronounces it "za-bay-lee-ah". If written like he pronounces it, it would read James Zabeilia.
What gives? I know, I know. It ain't a huge global concern, but this is the sort of shit running through my mind to bide my time until Miami.

I've only heard Pete Tong say it, and he said "Zah Beh Lah," but he also says "Sasha" funny, so I dunno.
btw - how do you pronounce Larry Levan? Is it like the last two syllables of "eleven," or is it "Luh VAN"???

what about Anthony Pappa? I always hear it pronounced as "pa-pa" or "pap-pa." I like pap-pa better.

When I read it I always say "Za-bee-el-ah" but when I heard Tong I heard "Za-bee-l-eya" (like Amelia).
Who knows; I hear he's a super cool guy though, so maybe I'll ask him in Miami (I'm gonna be at least 3 things he's scheduled to appear at and 1 of them is pretty small).

HA! That's awesome - I was totally gonna start this exact thread just yesterday! It's Pete Tong that screws it up, too, with his "Zabeelia" business.
The dude posted on NB a few times - maybe we can figure out a way to get him here to clear it up. :D

Unfortunately, he was swept away in the cataclysmic event that was the collapse of NB. :nonono:
