John Selway provides a sly and innovative take on electro when stepping to the decks, a welcome departure from the slapdash style of current retro spinners. Recognized for his work with producer Christian Smith, Selway has recorded under numerous monikers for production houses Direct Drive, Plus 8 and Deep Dish. He's also turned a set for the hotel-lounge soundtrack series Journeys by DJ. His fresh-style approach--which includes spinning records backward and an excessive use of loops--has earned Selway a reputation for keeping revelers moving on the main floor well past official closing hours. Whether with a thumping techno stormer or a funked-up abstract rhythm, Selway's got a steady finger on the trend pulse. The N.Y.C.-based DJ is in town to help local production house Funkshun Produkshunz celebrate its two-year anniversary, so be sure to don your party hat. (S.V.)
