we haven't put in RC4 because it's a chore to upgrade due to some of our custom hacks.

It's a version number. Software goes through a number of version names before a public release.

Beta
Release Candidate
Gold or Golden Master


For most 'ware, the public only sees the Gold version. For some reason vBulletin decided to release their test versions publicly. Release Candidate 2 was pretty stable and complete, so we installed it here.
