If GOA and Testachio are the “Glam” of Rome
then Branca is the “dirty hippie”. Or perhaps rather the
“Ultra-Laxx” Yang to the fashion show “ying”. Don’t
get me wrong..you’ll still see plenty mullets, pink high heals
and leg warmers but they’ll be mixed in with Ravers, Ibiza
types, Dreaded dub heads, Mohawked techno Germans,
breakdancers and the occasional goth (looking rather lost
and pre-occupied.) THIS ladies and gents is the Utopian
type environment that I look for in clubland.

In fact this space has more in common with
DUMBO’S Lunaterium a few years ago (when it was
raw and wild) than with any space you’ll
find in Manhatten. It’s what Italians over here call
a: “Centro-sociale”(Social-center) for youth.
Run by the people FOR the people. No list..no attitude,
layed back bouncers (Who you’ll often spot tokin on
spliff) and the best prices in the Roman night-life
scene.....

FIVE euros will give you access to one of the
best soundsystems in Rome with a line up that
NEVER disappoints! Plus there is also a “down tempo
old school chill out room” A Movie theater upstairs
(which plays cool “indie” and trippy movie retrospectives.)
as well as a gallery hosting art exhibits by unknown locals, a
restaurant lounge and three bars with great drink
specials. Truly an ideal spot for those looking for
something beyond the established clubbing environment.

There certainly isn’t a lack of great nights at Branca…
Wednesdays residents: Mixx Lilith, Spirit-resonance,
AC-DJ and Giorgio Galotti throw an electro-tinged
night called: Firewater. Past guests have included:
Legowelt, Orange electronik, Electric Indigo and Swayzak..

THURSDAYS you have a DUBerrific hazed night with the
ONE LOVE crew…

FRIDAYS is the breakbeat-D&B orgy of AGATHA with people like:
Meat Katie,Rennie Pilgrim,
Plump DJs, Aquasky, and Casino royal
(among many others)throwin down LIVE and DJ sets.
Residents Lai and Petitti have just released a
compilation entiltled AGATHABREAKS. I must for break heads
curious as to what the Rome scene sounds like…

SATURDAYS is Michrohouse with
Dozzy, Trodini and Rumi laying down the tech and
clickyier side of house and techno..
This night can range on sounds depending on the wide range
of guests that pass by..Garnier, Layo and Bushwacka, Steve Bug,
Carl Craig, Agoria, Tiefschwartz , Metro Area
(amongst hundreds more) have all grazed the Michrohouse
stage this season.

Branca also hosts VJ and DJ competitions and has
collaborated with other European music organizations
such as Barcelona’s SONAR SOUND
(Bringing the likes of Barcelona's
SIDERAL last year)

They also work with EUROPE MUSIC FESTIVAL hosting
several events both IN and out of BRANCA:
Currently Branca along with Impact, Dissonanze
and bbs Are throwing a series of “experimental”
electronic evenings inside Rome’s Teatro Palladiun
called Sensoralia (Piazza B. Roma) Metamkine, Mike cooper
have show cased talent.Starts early and ends before 1:00 am..
You can chill and listen to more ambient, experimental
and minimal LIVE and DJ sets alongside some of Europe’s
more established Video artists.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Getting to Brancaleone is a bitch.
YOU DEFINITELY NEED A CAR!!

If you cab it from the
“down town” area the fee will set you back somewhere
between 13 to 15 Euros. This space is outside of the
clubbing “Testachio” circuit in an isolated neighborhood
near the Nomentana. Once there you’ll think
you are going to someone’s big house (Since the venue a big
“Villa” type appearance from the outside.) Don’t be
discouraged by a giant line outside, It actually moves
VERY quickly. Your best bet is to get there before midnight,
sit in one of the side rooms tokin and drinking and wait till
they open the BIG ROOM round 1:00 am. Trust me..the trip
is worth it. Everyone I’ve ever taken there from NYC has
never seen anything like it.(and some perhaps walk away remembering
too little of it the next day..a typical Branca side effect.)
