Need recommendations on things to do, places to eat, and lounges in washington, DC and northern virginia!

What sort of things are you looking to do? Here are a few recommendations (I live in DC)

Things to Do:
Monuments - if you haven't, or even if you've already seen them, everyone should check out the historical sights. Go to the National Mall (between Wash. Monument and Capitol), walk around, there are plenty of free museums, go to the Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, etc, etc. The Cherry Blossoms will be at peak next weekend (L'Enfant Metro)

Neighborhoods - you can take a stroll around some neighborhoods for local flavor. Dupont Circle (Dupont Metro, approx. P & Conn. Ave, NW). Adams Morgan (18th & Columbia, NW). There are plenty of restaurants in both neighborhoods.

DC United - go to a DC United game, there's one coming up on the 3rd.

Restaurants:
There are too many to list, the Washingtonian (http://www.washingtonian.com) has a good list. If you go to Adams Morgan or Dupont Circle, there will be plenty of restaurants around. Here are a few:

Jaleo - Spanish tapas (7th & E, NW)
Zaytinya - Mediterranean (9th & H, NW)
Malaysia Kopitiam - Malaysian (18th & M, NW)
Pollo Rico - Peruvian (Arlington, VA - cheap/takeout)

Lounges:
Chi Cha (U & 16th, NW)
Local 16 (U & 16th, NW)
Gua-Rapo (Arlington, VA)
18th St. Lounge (18th & M, NW)

Hope that helps!

When I was in DC a couple of years ago we went to the Roosevelt Memorial and I really enjoyed it. This memorial is very different from others in DC and I highly recommend checking it out. We went at night, and I think made it all the more striking. The architecture and design of the site, combined with the lighting and the use of water were just simply breathtaking. For me, it ranks right up there with the Vietnam War Memorial. I'm looking forward to going again in the near future. :)

Oh, and you must must MUST go to Thomas Sweet in Georgetown at the corner of Wisconsin and O Street. Yummmmmmm ... *melting into puddle of ice creamy dreaminess*

Walking around Georgetown is really pretty in general. Plus, I ran into Omarosa from "The Apprentice" on M Street last Sunday, so who knows who you will see. :D

i live in georgetown

thomas sweet is damn good ice cream. apparently their frozen yogurt is good as well, if you're into that sort of thing. all the girls around here think it's fantastic. and, i mean, girls are the authority on frozen yogurt, i suppose.

if you enjoy firefly check out saki in adams morgan, lounge/sushi room. definatly a hot spot nowadays.

cant say much about the rest of the places you listed. zatinya is pretty good, done lunch there a few times. layouts very nice and the foods just as good.

mien yu in georgetown has also proved worth checking out.

hope this helps :sip:

Cafe Atlantico - this spot is pretty good. They have nice drinks. I think it's a little overpriced however.

Zaytinya - this place is really popular these days. The food is excellent and their bar gets packed.

Unfortunately I haven't been to those others you listed. I listed a few other suggestions in a previous post. If you want to spend money (but make it worthwhile) I'd suggest Makoto - a tiny Japanese restaurant. It's incredible.

Georgia Browns - fou fou Southern food

DC Specialties (Ethnic) - if you are looking for food that is in abundance in DC, but perhaps not everywhere, I'd suggest going for Ethiopian, Salvadoran, or Peruvian food. (For soul food - try Florida Ave. Grill - FL Ave. & 11th, NW)

Ethiopian - go to Adams Morgan (18th & Columbia Rd., NW) or U St. (14th & U, NW) and you'll find plenty. Awash and Meskerem are popular Adams Morgan spots.

Salvadoran - There are plenty of Salvadoran places everywhere. In Arlington (south) there are many lining Columbia Pike and Glebe Road. Restaurant Abi, Atlacatl, and Restaurante El Salvador are all popular there. In DC, your best bet is to head over to Mt. Pleasant/Adams Morgan. The largest concentration of them will be along Mt. Pleasant Rd. (near 16th & Columbia, NW)

Peruvian - Peruvian chicken is popular here. Pollo Rico is perhaps the most popular place, it's in Arlington. There's also Cuzco in Arlington which is more restauranty.

Don't worry -- they are low enough for even us midgets to grab. :)

A tip for picture taking ... You may want to turn your flash off to get the nice framed distance shots.

im a big fan of buonaparte bistro on wisconsin ave. in georgetown for crepes.

also, dc coast has fantastic cajun food. oceanaire seafood room is basically a steakhouse, but with seafood... pretty cool. and definitely tasty. expensive though.

i'll think of some more things when i get a chance.

Firefly has a bad write up, food is supposedly not great.
Cafe Atlantico is YUMMY, although there isn't much around there for after.
Zatinya is supposedly awesome.

The others I haven't heard of.

Red, Dragonfly, 18th Street Lounge, Andalu are all in dupont and are decent lounges.
Look in Washington Post's entertainment section for addresses.

I like Blue Room too, it's in Adam's morgan on 18th street. Benke has spun there a number of times.

Other good eats:

Just went to Mie n Yu on M street in G-town. The atmosphere is awesome. So chill. The martinis are $10 each (yikes! although NYrs are probably used to that). The food is very pricey, but VERY good. I definitely recommend. They claim that it's Mediterranean, and I guess it is kind of. I had pesto hummus with fried plantain and pita bread, and a vegetable samosa??? My friends had tuna tartar, veal something or other and a scallop dish.

The bread service is awesome!

I like Peacock Cafe for brunch in G Town, especially if you can get a table outside. It's on Prospect. Good Mamosas and smoothies.

Cafe Atlantico was sooooo good! try and get seats at the tasting bar. they serve 35 different bite-size samplings...like foie gras soup, or tuna siveche on a stick. :D

also, we went to Clyde's for brunch and had the BEST eggs benedict w/ crab cakes, along with some bloody mary's...it was sooooo good. be prepared to wait for 15 -20 minutes for a table during prime-time brunch hours, but trust me, it's well worth it.

cherry blossoms were absolutely beautiful...such a great place to get away to for a weekend. Good times indeed!

I hear Eggs Benedict for brunch is a bacteria swimming pool....

anyway, I am really looking fwd to this weekend. I expect to get up early on Saturday to check out the blossoms, hit a brunch, and I have a reservation at Zaytinya for 5:45,,,, plenty of time to go catch the fireworks at 8pm.

60 degrees and sunny on Saturday! WOOT.

My sister is taking us to a lounge on Friday or something, should be cool.
