The eleventh edition of Sónar will
be held on June 17, 18 and 19.

Concerts by Massive Attack and Sketch Show +
Ryuichi Sakamoto = Human Audio Sponge , the name
behind which are hidden the three members of the
legendary Yellow Magic Orchestra, are some of the
highlights of Sónar by Night in Fira Gran Via M2.

Gang Starr, Buck65, Madlib and Beans are at the top
of a roster on which hip-hop is the big star of the
year. Kid Koala, Boom Bip, Danger Mouse, Prince Po,
Dabrye, Manuvers, Doily, Nobody and La Mano Fría and
many more introduce a formidable line-up that also
features national artists such as Tote King, Tremendo,
La Excepción and Roty340.

As in previous years, Sónar by Day will present an
overview of the latest trends in electronica, hip-hop,
electronic pop, microhouse, electro, post-rock electronics,
digital concretism and electronic jazz.

For the second year running the L’Auditori de
Barcelona will be hosting an highly original musical
proposal: the Orquesta Sinfònica de Barcelona i Nacional
de Catalunya (OBC) will perform a selection of classical
and contemporary music pieces with the intervention of
Ryuichi Sakamoto, Pan Sonic and Fennesz as sound hackers.

Coinciding with the Universal Forum of Cultures
Barcelona 2004, the Friday night will be called
SonarForum Night and will feature a wide range of
musical proposals onto the programme that have been
expressly chosen because of their geographical and
stylistic diversity

A little birdy told
me that this year is gonna
be a fuck all mob scene due
to the many festivals coinciding with
SONAR this June..
(the city itself is expecting
a crazy amount of tourists
the entire summer.)

If anyone’s thinking of going
this year I suggest you look into
it and make reservations SOONER
than later.

**************
Sónar now offers you the services of HOTEL PLEASE! ,
a reservation center that collaborates with the
festival. You can make reservations online or by
calling 902 176 176 (from Spain) or +34 91 713 07
77 (from outside Spain). When you call, indicate
the Sónar reference so you will be given
preference when it comes to finding a room.

Sónar takes part in the Universal Forum of Cultures Barcelona 2004

The multicultural and cosmopolitan aspects of Sónar are contributing to the Forum Barcelona 2004 on Thursday June the 17th with the concert at L’Auditori and the SonarForum Night on the following day: over eight hours of uninterrupted electronic music that has been expressly selected under the criteria of diversity, geography and stylistics.

Representatives from different countries (Japan, Brazil, Chile, Great Britain, Canada, France, Spain, USA...) and music genres (hip-hop, techno, minimal, underground rap, drum’n’bass, funky carioca, electronica...) will join along with the spirit and the objectives of one of the Forum Barcelona 2004 main theme areas: diversity, in this specific case musical diversity, wherever it may come from.

The SonarForum Night maps out a voyage through the most diverse musical itineraries of the moment. The three components of the mythical Yellow Magic Orchestra, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi (the latter two are active members of Sketch Show), are teaming up more than a decade later to give a unique live performance as Human Audio Sponge, an exclusive concert for Sónar 2004. The line up also features Richie Hawtin vs. Ricardo Villalobos, Matthew Dear, the band members of Eletronika Brazil, Agoria, So Solid Crew, Dj Patife, Roots Manuva and one of most impressive hip hop living legend: Guru, of Gang Starr.

The audiovisual programme introduces the works of Lia and the Area 3 collective, who will project - in the SonarPark stage - the visual poems integrated in the "mapapoetic" project, a project which involves the reinterpretation in a non verbal language of a poem of a universal author by a contemporary creator from the city. This project will be programmed in different areas of the city as part of the Forum Barcelona 2004 programme.

Artists of the SonarForum Night:

• SKETCH SHOW + RYUICHI SAKAMOTO = HUMAN AUDIO SPONGE (JP): A pioneer of electronica and Oscar award winner for his film soundtrack “The Last Emperor”, Ryuichi Sakamoto, perhaps the most internationally acclaimed Japanese music composer, is coming to Sónar accompanied by his fellow travellers from the Yellow Magic Orchestra: Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi. Rebaptised the Human Audio Sponge and with visual backups by Ryoichi Kurokawa, the three artists will present one of the most awaited and exclusive live acts of SonarForum Night.
web

• GANG STARR (VIRGIN / US): This mythical hip-hop band made up of DJ Premier and the legendary Guru once again made the headlines a few months ago with their spectacular LP "The Ownerz". And the fact is that genre classics like themselves never throw down the towel. A decisive chapter in the history of rap in the Big Apple.
web

• ROOTS MANUVA (NINJA TUNE / UK): With hefty releases such as "Brand New Second Hand" and "Run Come Save Me", Roots Manuva have deservedly earned the title of godfathers hip-hop of the British Isles. The rapper and producer Rodney Smith has captivated audiences around half the globe with his personal way of understanding music with rhythms from dancehall, dub and hip-hop. On this occasion he will be presenting a new group together with a new show.
web

• RICHIE HAWTIN (CA) VS. RICARDO VILLALOBOS (CL): A face to face (turntables, efx & machines) between two of today’s maximum exponents of electronic minimalism: Richie Hawtin and Ricardo Villalobos. A duel at the top which will help to clarify exactly why these two heavy weights of electronica have achieved such fame and success and that promises to be an unforgettable event for less orthodox and more demanding clubbers.

• MATTHEW DEAR (GHOSTLY / US): Inspired by the work of pioneers such as Mike Ink and Thomas Brinkmann, Matthew Dear has known how to digest, manipulate and reinvent his own version of techno funky and minimal. His recent incorporation onto the catalogues of Plus 8 and Perlon has firmly placed the author of “Leave Luck To Heaven” as a key figure on the scene, capable of redefining the limits of club music without losing track of his most essential objective: that the audience wants to dance.
web

• INSTITUTO (BR): From the heart of Sao Paulo, Daniel Ganjaman, Tejo and Rica Amabis articulate their curious mix of Brazilian roots (samba, maracatu, ciranda…) and latest generation downtempo (with constant references to dub, hip-hop and electronics) with all the resources they have within reach: the label and on-line radio station Selo Instituto and collaborations with distinguished Brazilian artists.
web

• DJ MARLBORO (BR): The flagship of carioca funk, a kind of Brazilian booty bass, in other words, sensual, sexual and hyper-rhythmic. Fernando’s work as a DJ and producer is paradigmatic of an underground movement which edits its own material and mobilizes thousands of people every weekend, who go to its parties and tune into the Big Mix radio programme. What people dance to in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.

• NEGO MOÇAMBIQUE (BR): With a palette of professed influences that includes Herbie Hancock and LFO without leaving out Prince and Deodato, Nego Moçambique creates his own version of danceable music. A pinch of funk, a dash of hip-hop and loads of African influences, with house as a backdrop.
web

• AGORIA (PIAS / FR): Sebastien Devaud is one of the great new revelations of French techno. Strongly influenced (and respected) by the fathers of Detroit techno but with a highly personal and very elaborate sound of their own, the tracks of Agoria are a feast of precise rhythms, electronic soul and sour synthetic sweetness. “Blossom”, his first long play release, has more than confirmed our high expectations. And this is just the beginning...
web

• SO SOLID CREW (INDEPENDIENTE / UK): The most loved and feared collective of the London underground is making a landing at SónarPark with four of its heftiest artists: Lisa Maffia, Mega Man, Neutrino and DJ Swizz. A mayhem of two-step, garage, rap and bullet proof breaks. The latest soundtrack from the ghetto.
web

• DJ PATIFE (SAMBALOCO / BR): His first experience behind the decks was alongside Fatos Reais, a genuine primordial hip-hop band that enabled him to learn the ropes before taking off on his own in the mid nineties in the booths of the influential Arena Music Hall club of his native Sao Paulo. He is now regarded as one of the flagships of Brazilian deejaying and his sets are a feast of drum’n’bass, nu skool beats and futurist funk.
