Was going to piggyback on Cunt Olympia's thread but decided to make one on my own here.
So we were thinking of renting a car to drive to detroit for movement this year. Has anyone done this? When I first thought of doing it, someone told me 8-10 hours, but then last night someone was like, no way, it takes more like 15.
have you ever driven there? how long did it take you? should i just buck up and buy a plane ticket?

it's about 10-12 hours if you drive across ontario from niagara falls to sarnia across the QEW. a lot longer if you stay in the states.
it really sucks to finish the drive, as by the time you're already getting fatigued, you start driving into the sun.
there used to be cheap commuter flights from westchester airport to detroit... dunno if they're still available.
all my family have moved from teh detroit/windsor area, and i haven't been out there in over 5 years.
jdogg might be a good person to ask, he used to drive & fly from NY <--> flint every couple of months for a lot of years.

twice. with my ex in 01 and with the rev in 02. its about 13 hrs. you can try to speed, but one way or another u still end up spending 13 hrs. Best is to avoid outgoing rushhour and dont think about stopping in PA save for gas or food if the timing works. in 01 we had no plans, jsut to get there, so we slept a lil bit at an ohio roadstop. in 02 gene made the brilliant plan to book something so that took the pressure off. Of course crazy stackerman drove the entire drive back, complete with my newfound sewer grate (is it still around?) from nearby the motel.
do it. raod trips for dope parties and festivals have been known to be better or at least remembered better than the parties themselves. vegetarians should know that in the midwest tofu is mixed with meat. even the grass is sprayed with meat juice. maybe the vegotrons should stick to flying or packing food with htem.
oh man, gonna be an interesting sommer for festivals here.

About 12 hours, and no speeding in Ohio. Just buy a ticket from Spirit for $119.

Not all the way through, but I have driven New York-Cleveland (8ish hours) tons of times and Cleveland-Detroit (3ish hours).
Though you'd be driving Memorial Day Weekend? Tack on at least a couple hours due to traffic.
Flying is the new roadtrip.

Why does everyone say no speeding in Ohio? I live here and have never had a problem (I usually drive 10 over, 12-15 if I'm feeling fiesty).
The only speeding ticket I've gotten in the last 7 years was in western New York last December. $180. Bitches!

My dad was a travellin' salesman (thats how the "House of Bad Points Blues" starts, by the way), whose logged about a million miles driving around Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky, etc., and he will tell you Ohio highway cops are far and away the worst.
Any road map he ever draws also includes markers for likely speed traps

thanks for the feedback you guys.....
now i must admit (and i'm embarrassed!!) i'm a little unresourceful when it comes to fare-hunting for flights. if it is not on orbitz or something similar, i just won't find it.
where are these 100 dollar flights we are talking about?

prices are more like 180-200 leaving friday and returning monday.
as for renting a car, forget it....it's gonna cost you like 600 bucks for the car, 100 bucks gas minimum (12 hours is about 1.5-2 tanks of gas) plus like 50 for tolls....if you go with 4 people it comes out to about 190 per person....that's how much a flight costs.

I'm retarded. for some reason I thought you guys had a car to drive. I didnt realize you wanted to rent one. If its going to be that expensive you might as well fly. we may actually have ride with someone else, but its all up in the air as of now.

Agreed. The drive can be alot of fun with the right people and cd's. I've always been a fan of roadtrips.
Twister!  So funny you said that, because I've said that countless times to my mother when I visit (she lives in Ohio, i grew up there) and she looks at me like I'm crazy.
And, Cedar Point rocks.
