* MUTEK 2004 FESTIVAL OVERVIEW *
=====================================
WELCOME TO MUTEK 2004!
It's been five years since the Montreal's MUTEK festival carved out a home for European conceptual expression in North America's trend-setting über-music culture. Experiments with electronics have evolved in the last half-decade, and the organizers are now in the position to showcase the proliferation that currently defines the two ends of digital innovation, from the hyperactive genre bending of beat-centric culture to the organic clinicism of aural environments. Not to mention everything in between.
From June 2nd to the 6th Montreal will transform into the quintessential electronic music immersive experience. With over fifty-five artists from over ten countries, with eleven different showcases, panel discussions, workshops, and a bagful of surprises, audiences will be able to enjoy all permutations of contemporary electronic music from morning to night. And this year being a landmark birthday for the festival, some of our best friends have returned to mark the occasion with some rare performances.
This year's highlights include:
* CHESSMACHINE, an art project developed by two of today's leading avant-garde tone designers, American RICHARD CHARTIER and the Russian IVAN PAVLOV aka COH. The game can be seen referring to the historical counter-standing of two political systems clashing in a quiet conflict over a chessboard in the times of cold war-in this project these become the use of MAC and PC computer operating systems respectively by Chartier and Pavlov, as well as other subjective metaphors for opposing sides.
** Berlin's SCHNEIDER TM will offer up abstracted pop expressions from their miasmic Zoomer full-length on Mute.
*** RASTER-NOTON, the masters of experiential electronics come together for a special performance on one stage. FRANK BRETSCHNEIDER, NOTO, and BYETONE will each deliver solo performances of deconstructed rhythms and laconic beats, before joining together to perform a rare live collaboration as SIGNAL.
**** The Metropolis hosts what is bound to become a legendary performance by Richie Hawtin's PLASTIKMAN persona. An event shrouded in rumors and secrecy, all that can be disclosed is that fact that it will be the most ambitious and audacious audio/visual undertaking of a live set any producer has ever assembled. The first live PLASTIKMAN show in over nine years, the set will present a cross-section of his discography to date.
***** SPECIAL UPDATE Due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts, RICARDO VILLALOBOS has had to cancel his Friday, June 4th appearance at Metropolis. Replacing him will be the legendary ANDREW WEATHERALL. Apart from his groundbreaking work with Sabres of Paradise and Two Lone Swordsmen, WEATHERALL also achieved notoriety as a band producer for his seminal work on Primal Scream's "Screamadelica". He will be DJing after PLASTIKMAN'S performance.
****** For MUTEK's first all-night party, a collection of the world's most outspoken club rockers come together to take apart the Metropolis from the inside out. Featuring a DJ set by HERBERT , and live sets by JASON FORREST, CRACKHAUS, KRIKOR, and many more.
******* A rare live performance by ceaseless experimenter, BURNT FRIEDMAN, and legendary CAN drummer, JAKI LIEBEZEIT. Operating expansively on utterly different levels on the other side of redundancy, the two deftly and casually maneuver round the jagged rocks of "four-four time". With Joseph Suchy on guitar, at their side, they constitute a musical organism.
