Decided to go to Cargo tonight to see Eddy Temple Morris, Freestylers (live) and Krafty Kuts.
Eddy Temple Morris warmed up from 8-10 and was average, playing hip-hop remixes with questionable mixing. Played the bootleg of Crazy in Love by Beyonce cut with It's Jazzy by Roni Size and that was the highlight of his set. Average.
Then, the Freestylers came on. A drummer, a bass guitarist, a DJ and Pianist (Aston Harvey) and an MC (MC Surreal). There was no Matt Cantor as far as I could see. They smashed it out from the start. Started with an absolutely banging tune that's been doing the rounds for a while though I don't know the name of it. Quality. They went into a tune called "I hate to say I told you so" featuring Valerie on vox, then a lovely liquidy funky hard hitting DnB style tune again with Valerie.
After that, they went into a few tunes I don't know, then a FANTASTIC old skool hardcore style breakbeat tune with a lovely piano riff in it. Then, they brought on Theo on guest vox and played the tune "push up" which sounds to me like the beat to BLIM's remix of "come let me know" (at least on Krafty Kut's These are the breaks album) but with a great vocal over it. Then came another banging track, and they then went onto "Punks" which got the crowd jumping.
Came on for an encore, and started on the famous "get a life", into another tune, before they ABSOLUTELY SMASHED IT with the baddest bassline led tune I've heard for a while. Don't know what it is, but when I find out I'm going to buy it and pretend to mix. Absolutely superb. So impressed by them. However, I have one complaint, they were breaking between the tunes to set up, though in the encore it flowed.
As far as I can see, "Raw as Fuck" is going to be one of the albums of the year, so buy it.
Didn't stay to catch Krafty Kuts and Skool Of Thought back to back, was knackered, but it was a great night.
