Wait forget about forgetting it.
I still don't know why. I thought it was b/c of spamming
that BMC was talking about in feedback, but that was like
a while ago.
Why close it now?
This is really important to me.
:(

The thread was closed because it was just exceptionally ugly.
U-G-L-Y... YOU AIN'T GOT NO ALIBY... YOU UGLY!
HaroldJoyce got his due flaming, no need to let it drag out any further. Further nastiness would just be embarassing and unproductive for everyone.
On that note - please don't expect an explanation for every time we moderate something. There simply isn't enough time in the world for us to do that.

you have time to read the post or thread and "moderate" a thread but you don't want to explain your reasons for it because there isn't enough time for that? there isn't a few seconds or maybe "a" minute to write up an explanation for your actions against the issue? perhaps your moderating team does not have time to come up with a "valid excuse" for there moderating actions you mean, is that correct?

What have you done for us to make you think you are owed an explanation for every decision that we make? That's a pretty obnoxious attitude.

I don't think an explanation is needed for everything, however, people can know what to expect if they don't moderate themselves better when they're told how they screwed the pooch or went too far. Perhaps the issue need not be raised in a thread, but addressed via private messages.

Agreed, a public explanation is a good thing when there's ambiguity as to why action was taken... but I think it's pretty obvious why this particular thread was closed. Bart is just upset that we took his toy away.
When we're moderating, we ALWAYS contact the people involved directly.
90% of moderation is done person to person - and it's discreet. Obviously since it's carried on in private, most people at large don't know the minutae of what moderation is going down. And they don't really need to know either - while it may amuse people to publicly debate moderation, there's usually more complexities to the issue than can be shared.

itd be funny if this thread got closed,
then someone could start a new thread saying
why did the "why did the vodka thread get closed?" thread get closed?

why did the why did the vodka thread get closed get closed?
That pattern could continue for ages, and then we could have a:
"why did the why did the why did the why did the why did the why did the why did the why did the why did the vodka thread get closed get closed get closed get closed get closed get closed get closed get closed get closed?"

That's a pretty insulting implication Santosh.
There is soooo much more moderation than people realize, we're doing stuff all the time:
Moved threads, removed threads, merged threads, LOT's and LOTS of PMs to people acting out, NSFW tags added, threads saved, threads flagged, dupes removed, events read, events edited, problem members discussed, future features designed and built....
The moderation team discusses everything to a point that would bore most people. The debates are long and involved, and they're private so we can get shit done. We even have a codefied set of guidelines we wrote to help guide or tie-break stuck decisions.
so where would YOU start? Why would we publicly explain one thing and then not another?
