If I had known that 8 Ball (for example) was in trouble (i think it was financial problems, dont actually remember) I would have tried to shop there more. I hope that the other record stores will let us know if things are really bad for them so we can help out, ala It's a Wonderful Life :nice:

stopped in there last night and there was a very nice selection of upfront stuff, plus they're very accomodating in terms of special ordering stuff that they might be out of stock on or filling people's 'wish lists.
definitely worth checking out and supporting.

support one of the oldest, coolest record stores EVER... Sonic Groove - Owned by Frankie Bones, Adam X, and Heather Heart (can you say pioneers?) They're on Ave B. between 12 and 13th Sts.
:nice:

sonic groove's a cool store, I wish they stocked less trancey music since I can't really find a use for it in NYC...authentic old skool, though.
There's a new store on Ave A between 3rd and 4th that's got some old electronic tunes from around the world...truly inspirational, and right down the street from good baklava! MMmmmm...baklavaa...rrghrghrg

I thought 8 Ball lost the lease on their store  and then I guess financial difficulties followed from that :(

I don't know when the last time you were in the store was, but they stock very little if ANY trance. All techno (minimal to hard)/electro/industrial, even some breaks. They know their shit - most of their stuff is actually broken down into countries and labels instead of genres, but Dan Physics is a know-it-all and he's there almost everyday to help. ;)

I'm bummed about 8-ball too, but I did shop there alot, it's near my house. I loved it there they helped me out ALOT. :(
I like satellite, turntable labs, dance tracks...I went to one store which I won't name (but I should cuz they were DICKS). I went in early on a Saturday - probably around noon...there was so much cigarette smoke I could hardly see what was on the wall....I went up to the man who looked like he was working.. I was about to ask him how the store was laid out, and he blew all this smoke in my face...saying 'so another chick dj, huh?'
(no, actually I'm a plumber that needs tunes bonehead)
I was like 'nevermind asshole'...and I walked out.
Too bad they have no clue how much (too much) I spend on records.

Heartbeat, on 10th st, could def. use the business. You're not gonna find tech house in there, but they've got a great selection and a basement full of classics and gems for a buck apiece.

yeah they're all in trouble, for the most part.
How to support? Play less CDr's & buy more vinyl!! Honestly, most of the online stores are doing fine. And the walk-in stores that have online shops are cool as well. But many of them are shutting their doors to go strictly online.
Economy, technology, and anti-rave laws have put the dance music community in some hard times. hopefully it will pull through, . . .and return to what is was 5 or 6 years ago, . . . . . . but i'm not getting my hopes up . . . .

Definitely NOT a trance shop.. a few weeks ago i was there and somebody called and asked heather if they sell trance... she said no way and hung up.
Help to keep sonic alive and running is very much needed, keep buying and often. The only record shop i know that is doing relatively well is dance tracks and i think that's because they charge a bit more for their records.

yeah, read the thread dewd, i took it back already. i was in there listening to records two days before i said that, mixed the memory of that experience with some mushies, and arrived at a whole new memory of listening to trance music.
I also thought a girl i've been seeing was an ex-girlfriend who had tracked me down and was stalking me. Weird shit, but reality's gradually seeping back in :)
Anyway, that record store on Ave A between 4th and 5th is called Etherea...small selection but quality on all sorts of techy genres. I picked up two Kompakt EP's and two Trapez EP's over the weekend.
