Ever since his debut release on Ben Watt’s Buzzin’fly label in 2003, Justin Martin has made his presence felt in the international underground scene. Like a breath of fresh air clearing away the cobwebs and conventions, Justin, along with his San Franciscan dirtybird cohorts, has helped turn the traditional concepts of house and techno upside down. In the process, he’s become one of electronic music’s most beloved producers and DJs, earning legions of loyal fans from coast to coast and around the world.
As befits one of the underground’s most unique artists, he’ll be coming back to New York to play in one of the city’s most unique venues. On Sunday, June 13th, Justin will be throwing down at the amazing Water Taxi Beach Long Island City, as Basic NYC hosts this trailblazer for a special daytime/evening event. This is Justin’s first New York appearance in a year, and we’re sure he’s got loads of musical surprises ready for this one.
Justin’s music adheres to no musical boundaries, all coming together with the expressed interest to blow minds and move bodies. His sound is a stew of different strains, running anywhere from deep, SF-flavored house to buzzing Baltimore styled breakbeats, to cutting-edge minimal and tech. All of this comes together when Justin’s on the decks, making his sets totally unpredictable, yet coming together for a very certain outcome: intense dancing and dancefloor rejoicing.
Justin’s open-minded approach to his music is echoed by his dirtybird compatriots, including the label torch-bearer Claude Von Stroke and Justin’s own brother Christian. From their home base in San Francisco, dirtybird has spread its own brand of musical mischief around the world, earning praise and support from DJs, clubbers and producers of all stripes. They have truly become one of the brightest lights in the American dance scene, and in 2010, dirtybird is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a new CD compilation and several new releases.
Basic NYC has hosted Justin at the Sullivan Room for a few dates in the past, and this will be his first appearance at the Water Taxi Beach. This summer, Basic NYC resident DJs Sleepy & Boo are hosting events at both the Sullivan Room and Water Taxi, with their typically diverse lineups spanning the house and techno spectrum. Upcoming events include the launch of their Def Mix / Sullivan Room residency with David Morales in June, followed by Frankie Knuckles in July, and with a Satoshi Tomiie and Hector Romero beach party at Water Taxi in June. Marc Romboy, Fred Everything, and Derrick Carter are some of the other guests returning to New York this summer. Other guest DJs on the Water Taxi lineup include Basic NYC regulars Mixer Assassin, and Prawns and Bajaj, along with Kev O’Brien from the Stranjjur crew. The dirtybird bbq parties in San Francisco are infamous, and we’re excited to host our own burgers-and-beats beach sessions with one of our true favorites.
