More than 2,800 Attend Groundbreaking Music-Technology Event. Hosted by PRIMEDIA's Remix Magazine

(Emeryville, CA) - Remix magazine's Remix Hotel NYC 2004 (RHNYC) took the Big Apple by storm in June 2004 by hosting thousands of attendees for a three-day music-technology blowout. Remix Hotel NYC was hosted at the facilities of the prestigious SAE Institute of Technology, a leading audio and media production school.

Billed as Three Days of Total Technology Immersion, the free event attracted urban- and electronic-music producers, DJs and music enthusiasts, as well as top-ranked international artists such as Dan the Automator, Chuck D, Junior Sanchez, Afrika Bambaataa, Hank Shocklee, Nona Hendryx, Power 105's Dr. Dre and members of Public Enemy, to name a few. In this groundbreaking educational forum, Remix Hotel guests experienced the future of music technology through demonstrations by top artists; interaction with popular pro-audio manufacturers; makeshift live performances; and even a retail arena, hosted by Turntable Labs, with discounted prices on gear featured at the event.

New to this Remix Hotel event were Q&A sessions, a panel-type discussion program—alternately moderated by Kylee Swenson, Remix features editor, and Dustin Cook, SAE instructor—featuring artists and producers talking with attendees about production and performance techniques. Another new RHNYC innovation was the VIP Club Pass, which provided free or discounted access to several clubs and performances throughout the city during the three-day program. Participating venues included the Knitting Factory; Avalon; the Glass Lounge; Webster Hall; and the Tribeca Grand Hotel, which hosted the closing-night party with DJs Juice and Sharkey of Public Enemy, Kassette and Ming+FS.

"The added Q&A Sessions were a hit and will become a regular part of Remix Hotel programming for our attendees," says Joanne Zola, Remix associate publisher. "Also, this was our first stand-alone Remix Hotel event that did not coincide with another major audio or music-industry trade show or event. We are thrilled with the response we received in New York just eight months after our last visit and look forward to our return to the city in 2005."

Zola attributes most of the event's success-which matched attendance numbers in October 2003-to the support of Remix's team of technology partners: Cakewalk hosted the Hpnotiq lounge, as well as Chuck D and DJ Johnny Juice of Public Enemy; M-Audio featured a performance by Junior Sanchez; Remix hosted Handsome Boy Modeling School, featuring Dan the Automator and Prince Paul; Digidesign presented DXT in a special Q&A Session; Grammy Award-winning producer Prince Charles Alexander visited with Event Electronics guests; Tony Verderosa, Jason Nevins and Chris "The Greek" Panagji appeared with Steinberg; and WordsWorth MC'd a set for Rane and Serato. These were just a few of many sponsored artist performances and demonstrations throughout the three-day event.

"The M-Audio room at the Remix Hotel in NYC was great," says Gary Karlsrud, eastern sales director of M-Audio. "Attendance was better than expected at around 900 people per day. We had 40 to 50 people in our room transfixed for the duration of all six sessions on each of the three days.

"Flow-through was literally a couple thousand people," Karlsrud continues. "The artists' sets were well-received. The M-Audio-sponsored party was very cool with music ranging from the electronic to the eclectic."

According to Jo-Ann Nina of Shocklee Entertainment, the Remix Hotel NYC event was "successful, and the feedback around town has been nothing but positive!"

"Simply put, the Remix Hotel was the best industry event I have been to in a long time," says attendee Charles Rutledge, president and CEO of CYRU Records. "The exhibits from the manufacturers were not only exciting but informative, and the hands-on approach was refreshing. The staffs from SAE and, of course, Remix magazine, were hospitable and treated everyone like seasoned pros. I would suggest everyone attend, whether they've been in the business 20 years or are just starting out."

Returning technology partners M-Audio, Blue Sky, Mackie, Rane, Serato, Vestax, Cakewalk, Denon DJ, Pioneer Pro DJ, Ilio, IK Multimedia and Sirius Satellite Radio provided the value and stability of this event in its triumphant return to NYC. The lure of new Partners Apple, Event Electronics, Music Express, Steinberg with AMD and Alienware, Turntable Labs and Disc Makers, added to the return attendance. Additional sponsors included Hpnotiq, Red Bull, Gemini and host SAE.

Wow, didn't know that was Kylee... I read Remix and her editorals all the time. She did a good job at the q&as too. I picked up alot of great info, met some cool peeps, saw some old friends and will definitely go to their future events.

that kicked ass!

the best part for me was the q&a's, but the Cakewalk t-shirt & Mackie shot glasses are very cool as well (no, i dont use cakewalk, nor do i have or use a mackie... still cool tho, hehe)

those pioneer cdjs are so hot... goddam! and i really like those Blue Sky monitors... go figger ;)
