Techno futurist Jeff Mills rarely dwells on the past, choosing instead to keep pushing his music and artistic endeavors boldly forward. But 2012 marks a special occasion for Mills - the 20th Anniversary of his celebrated label Axis Records, an imprint that Jeff has carefully crafted into one of electronic music's most dynamic outlets. To celebrate this anniversary year, Jeff is returning to New York on Saturday, April 28th, as Basic brings this visionary back to (le) Poisson Rouge for another night of Mills’ uncompromising and iconic sounds.
From its very beginnings, Axis has presented a bold vision for electronic music, and served as Mills’ primary outlet for his own productions and projects. From the label’s very first release – H&M’s (Robert Hood and Jeff Mills) Tranquilizer EP, and continuing on for the last two decades, the label’s output has been bold, consistent and very much a personal representation of the evolution of Mills’ sound. The label’s most celebrated releases are arguably the Purpose Maker series, which launched an Axis sub-label and helped introduce a whole new sound – uptempo, hypnotic, tribal-tinged dance tracks that was hugely influential with techno DJs across the world. 1997’s “The Bells” is one of techno’s all-time classic tracks, with its ominous hook and hard-hitting beats; whenever Mills drops this in his sets, instant dancefloor mayhem occurs.
To mark the 20th anniversary, Jeff is releasing a very anticipated project: “Sequence”, a double-CD retrospective of selected Axis releases, along with a 320 page hard cover book of images, photos, and design works representing the Axs vision. He will be making Axis 20th appearances around the world, and we are very honored to host him in New York, a city that has always been a special place for Jeff since his early days as a resident DJ at the Limelight.
Mills is also making a number of headlining appearances at some of North America’s best festivals this spring. Just before his LPR appearance, he will be making his first-ever appearance in Washington DC at the Forward Festival. In May, Jeff will be performing as “The Wizard” as he takes to the mainstage as one of the headliners at Detroit’s Movement festival. Following that, he heads to Montreal for MUTEK, where he joins Shackleton, Monolake, Nicolas Jaar and many more.
Witnessing Jeff Mills DJ is truly something special. Working off of a multitude of turntables, CDJs and a Roland TR-909 drum machine, Mills is a flurry of activity live. His trademark style is a relentless, stripped-down electronic pulse that sucks in an amalgam of sounds and elements as his set progresses. Veering ably between tribal drums, synthetic melodies and harsh electronics, Mills refuses to let up on the energy, skillfully driving the dancefloor into overdrive. Mills’ sets are almost entirely composed of his own tracks, and hearing Mills perform is witnessing a master at work, as he skillfully layers multiple tracks and loops to truly take the dancefloor on a journey.
(le) Poisson Rouge is the perfect venue for this night, a space where the crowd can truly connect with the artist. With an upgraded DJ booth, reinforced sound, new lights and a new LED curtain, LPR is quickly becoming one of the finest rooms for dance music in New York. Jeff Mills is one of Basic's featured artists in a dynamic spring program of Basic nights, where he joins a wide range of house and techno luminaries for late night dance sessions. Mills has performed at many of their Basic parties before, but they are very excited to help mark this special occasion with one of the world’s must revered and influential artists.
