With Memorial Day in the history books, summer is officially on in New York City, and Basic is welcoming the season in style this Saturday, June 2nd. They’re bringing together a dynamic lineup of true-school techno, when Basic welcomes the Detroit legend, and Transmat founder, Derrick May to (le) Poisson Rouge, where he’ll be joined by French underground veteran Technasia, a new member of the Cadenza crew. It’s always an electric night when Derrick is on the decks, and with both of these artists making their LPR debuts on the night, they can’t wait to hear what these innovators have in store.
Some DJs see themselves as entertainers. But Derrick May fashions himself as a combatant, ready to do battle with the clubbers. “The audience is my enemy. My job is to destroy them,” he said in a recent interview. “That’s the way I approach any gig. I want to hurt you. I want you on your knees. That’s my approach.” It’s evident in his unique DJing style as well. May is a flurry of activity and energy behind the turntables, furiously tweaking EQ knobs, dropping new records into the mix and then quickly tossing them aside. Forget smooth and polished: Derrick May takes chances on the decks, mixing in new tunes with timeless classics and forgotten gems from across all genres of music.
Derrick May cemented his legacy with a string of now-legendary releases in the late 80s – “Nude Photo” and “Strings of Life” among the most acclaimed. His Transmat label quickly became known as one of the beacons for the new sounds that came from Detroit, and along with his fellow “Belleville Three” members Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins, May entered the international DJ scene. In many ways, he hasn’t looked back since, as he continues a relentless touring schedule that takes him across Europe, Asia and Australia almost every weekend.
France’s Charles Siegling has been making music as Technasia since the mid-90s, honing his unique style that pays homage to Detroit and Chicago while welcoming contemporary influences. Once a duo, Technasia is now Charles own solo project - and there are loads of new music and performances in the works for him. From uptempo, hard-hitting techno, to hypnotic dancefloor grooves, Technasia’s music has been a top choice of discerning DJs for years, with his 2011 album “Central” opening up his sound for legions of new fans. He also operates his own labels – Technasia Records and Sino, which have helped expose the world to artists including Joris Voorn and Dosem. Technasia is now a full-fledged member of the Cadenza Music label and camp, and just this past weekend he was one of Luciano’s special guests at the Vagabundos opening party at Pacha.
This is Derrick’s first NYC appearance since 2011, and it’s quite overdue. Playing the opening set on the night will be Simon Heyliger, who is also making his LPR debut, with Basic’s Sleepy & Boo on the decks as well. The resident duo is celebrating their two-year Sleepy & Boo + Friends anniversary at Cielo next Friday, June 8th, and following that up with the much-anticipated NYC return of the one and only Dave Clarke on June 9th at LPR. Join them for what promises to be a dynamic night of cutting edge music at (le) Poisson Rouge this Saturday.
