Unread Tuesday, Jun 26th 2012, 03:34 PM #1 Basic presents Robert Hood, Sleepy & Boo + more @ Public Assembly - Friday June 29th
Detroit techno's storied past features many key artists, records and labels, but one of the most important figures in the movement's history is Robert Hood. As one of the co-founders of the legendary outfit Underground Resistance, Hood has put his stamp on techno's evolution in many ways, driving the sound towards a sparse, stripped-down interpretation that pushed forward the concept of minimalism in techno. He continues to be a cult figure amongst music heads and DJs alike, and Basic is very excited to bring this innovator to Brooklyn on Friday, June 29th. He'll be deploying his no-nonsense, hard-edged techno in the front room of Williamsburg's Public Assembly for a night of cutting-edge, underground music.

When Robert Hood released his seminal double 12" EP "Minimal Nation" on Jeff Mills' Axis label in 1994, it was clear that Hood's music was going to change the face of techno forever. This release - stark, driving, and abstract - stood out at the time from the techno pack, eschewing the harder and louder sound for a more sophisticated, haunting pulse. It was a continuation of his early work with Underground Resistance, the infamous Detroit troupe he co-founded with Mills and 'Mad' Mike Banks, and helped establish his name as a standout solo producer. Re-released in 2009 by Hood himself, "Minimal Nation" remains one of the touchstones of Detroit techno and Hood's most well-known release.

In 1994, Hood launched his own M-Plant imprint, which was re-started in 2009 and continues to be the primary outlet for his music. His latest release is the "Altered Ego" EP, produced under his Floorplan alias, a dynamic two-track release which showcases both sides of Hood's current sound - with the A-Side featuring a hypnotic, no-holds-barred stabby dancefloor assault. On the flip, the BPMs slow down for a more soulful, piano-laden groove-heavy track - the kind of diversity you rarely find on a "techno" release these days. Along the way he has dropped memorable tracks on Tresor, Cheap, Peacefrog and Music Man, and in 2008 he took the helm of the fabled Fabric CD series for a 32-track showcase of his uncompromising DJ style.

Hood makes few US appearances each year, and this will be the first time we've hosted this distinguished artist at Public Assembly. We're bringing the party to the venue's front from, with Basic residents Sleepy & Boo joining him on the decks, along with a solid lineup of New York's finest - Cylo and Maksim from the Massive Groove posse, Dali, and Artwurk. With its recently-upgraded sound system, and pretention-free vibe, Public Assembly is a great location to host this event and we're excited to hear what Hood will unleash on the dancefloor. Don't miss this rare NYC date with this iconic DJ and producer.
