Well, I would assume that the America's Cup is only one class of boat (sailing yacht?), and not all that relevant as it's a race between just 2 individual clubs not a large field where additional strategy comes into play.

In the olympics there are 10+ sailing classes the majority of which have large fields.

TBH it is surprising that there's not more Americans in the sailing events

Similar reasons to Europe dominating Ryder Cup over the last 25 years or so but most major winners not being from there?

Fucking love the Olympics.

The Aussies say we're only good at sports that you can play sitting down. Tbh I'll take it.

Finished top of the medal table in:

Road Cycling
Track Cycling
Rowing
Equestrian

and could top the sailing table too, though more likely 2nd or 3rd.

Also potential in BMX.

Still though, i can't believe the Queen parachuted into the Olympic stadium at the Opening Ceremonies. That was seriously amazing. Why is more not being made of that?

Whiskey Joe from the local who is from Nottingham told me that.

Oh and it looks promising for Oz to top the sailing table

i may actually watch the (typically kind of bizarre and awkward) closing ceremonies for once:

What'll Go Down at the Olympics Closing Ceremony?

By Amos Barshad on August 9, 2012 10:13 AM ET

Just like with the Opening Ceremony — which rode a wave of geese and sheep and horses and cows and chickens and ducks to critical acclaim — the exact details of the Olympics Closing Ceremony are being kept under wraps. But some idea of what we'll be seeing on Sunday night has now been unveiled. And it sounds like what the Closing Ceremony will lack in farm animals, it'll make up for in famous musicians from throughout British history.

THR reports that "A big part of the ceremony — outside the required Olympic formalities of the athletes parade, the medal ceremony for the men's marathon and the handover to the next host city Rio de Janeiro in four years time — will play out under the name 'A Symphony of British Music.'" Lucky for London, the Brits have enough of a proud music history to be able to trot out all kind of crowd-pleasing Johnny-come-latelies and veteran pop stars and still squeeze in a bunch of seminal artists for cred points. Already officially booked: Muse, George Michael, The Who, Ed Sheeran, Liam Gallagher's Beady Eye, One Direction, and the reunited Spice Girls. Possibly on the docket: Kate Bush, Madness, the Pet Shop Boys, Paul McCartney (yes, again), The Kinks' Ray Davies, Adele, Paul Weller, non–Freddie Mercury members of Queen, and Mick Jagger. (This is all separate from the Hyde Park closing concert, which will feature Blur, The Specials, and Madness). Says Closing Ceremony director Dave Arnold, "if the Opening Ceremony was the wedding, then we're the wedding reception ... [it] should be the greatest after-party in the world." With all due respect for Dave Arnold and the 2012 London Olympics, the greatest after-party in the world took place last winter at my uncle Rocko's cabin upstate and featured three BB guns, a jug of Carlo Rossi, and some of the tastiest goddamn turkey bacon you'll have ever laid your eyes on. But, yeah, this Closing Ceremony sounds pretty good too.
Keepin' it over 30.

I read a few months back about some study that showed that bronze medalists tend to be much happier about their Olympic experience than silver medalists. Presumably b/c the bronzers are just happy to be on the medal stand while the silvers are pissed at how close they came to getting gold.

They could probably have saved themselves some time and just looked at this photo.

maybe this was a bad assumption given it is NBC, but i kind of thought the sound for the closing ceremonies would be a little less muddy given it was billed as a 2 hour tribute to British music

The closing ceremony was really quite horrible

Given how epic the games were (and they were), and how genuinely enjoyable the opening ceremony was (yes I know you had issues with it, but even the most cynical of my friends enjoyed it), it was a real let down actually.

Going to take more than this to ruin the Olympics for me though. Even though I wasn't there, my constant interaction with dozens of people who were means I will never forget this two weeks.

What, you didn't enjoy Russell Brand showing the entire world he's no Gene Wilder before then trying to tackle the Beatles?

*British, and yes I'm sure there was. Ray Davies sounded awful too (which was shocking considering how much I love the Kinks).

these were the only two snippets of the closing ceremony i caught on nbc, and they were both equally cringe-worthy.

i started watching during the 9th inning of the mets game thinking that it was in the bag (they were up 6-1). ~10pm?

of course when i saw the score this morning, they barely eeked it out 6-5. thank god i didn't watch the rest of the game.

It ran from about 8:20 to 11.

First 40 minutes or so were fine, pretty good even, (though even lip synced the dude who sings "Our House"'s voice is REALLY shot) though literally the second Russell Martin appeared the whole thing just fell through the floor and was horrid. Went from "a tribute to the British contribution to world culture" to "free concert at the mall".

And again, I can't help but wonder what some of these people are doing that they couldn't get them to show up (I know Noel Gallagher hates Liam, but they couldn't drag him out there for this? And Bowie would do "Extras" but not the Olympics?).

Also, is Elton John now like lifetime banned from all official British events because of his whole Princess Di thing? His exclusion from both Opening and Closing was noticeable to me.
Keepin' it over 30.
