As dubstep slowly juggernauts its way across the world as the sound of the modern dancefloor, Funafuji has planted the flag in South Africa, and leads the dubstep revolution from the fertile sonic soil of Cape Town. She is one of the main DJs and organizers of South Africa’s Step Up events. Since its inception at the beginning of 2008, the party has become a highlight on Cape Town’s music event calendar attracting hundreds of loyal bass-obsessed fans every month.
Her sets find her drifting between South Africa's own street sound of Kwaito and the UK-centric bass music that continue to mutate and morph into new forms. Wherever her sets lead her, the spirit of dub and roots provide the sonic foundation. For her first appearance in New York, expect Funafuji to provide a glimpse into the unique energy that powers the underground music culture that is thriving at the moment in South Africa.
Deep Space is an adventure into future dub, spacey vibes, and abstract grooves featuring resident dj François K. live on the mixingboard.
