I love when producer/DJs try their hands at scoring films. Some succeed (Mill's "Metropolis", Massive Attack's "Danny the dog") while others just make a muddy mess (Spooky's "Rebirth of a nation") The history of electronic inclined producers lending a hand to films is anything but new. Historical Artists such as Giorgio Moroder, Goblin, Vangelis, Brian Eno have all used their sounds to accompany moving images in the past. (Some of Moroder's scores like "Midnight Express" or Vangeli's "Bladerunner" are down right masterpieces.) There are even several festivals in Europe which celebrate the "electronic film score" with people like: james Lavelle, Danger Mouse, DJ Shadow, Scanner, Squarepusher, Amon Tobim and a slew of contemporary digital producers trying their hands at this art form. Like wise some artists like Cold Cut or even Mills are trying therir hands at the NEXT step: MIXING the audio from the video in real time with the aid of the mind blowing, film geek's wet dream: Pioneer DVJ DVD mixers. (Mill's SONAR 2004 set had a good 40 minutes of this mixed into his music set which had everyone who took notice dancing and pointing up at the screens like children at a fourth of July fire works display.) I love this sort of thing..then again I'm an animator and a film geek. I have yet to watch Mill's new work: "Three ages" with Mr. Keaton's classic film (of the same title) but I am really enjoying the tracks on their own. Classic simple Jazzy Detroit at its best. Ambient at times with Mill's hauntingly "removed" signature sound.(Even includes a couple of 4/4 dancefloor pleasers as well) Can't wait to run out and buy Keaton's film on DVD so I can do a double feature geekathon video projection on my Balcony of "Three Ages" and "Metropolis".
You guys heard this? Seen it with the film? What do you guys think of the edm producer scoring movie sound tracks? Got any faves?
