Time and Time again. This week The Good, The Bad, The Messy is out to show you good times and bad times. Summer has arrived which means more and more stuff to do, especially outside of your regular club environment. Also, as you will see a busy clubbing schedule can make real time a difficult thing to keep up with. So, without further ado, it is Time…

THE GOOD - Summer Time!
It is official. Summer is here. June is two weeks old, but the beach is already busy, and the outdoor parties have arrived. Summer in NYC is of course hot, sticky, sweaty and grimy, but it can also be a fantastic place to get your groove on outside in parks, on rooftops, at pools, on boats and more.

The top Summer shindig of course is the Museum of Modern Art’s weekly P.S.1 Warm-up series. I said it before and I’ll say it again, P.S.1 Warm-Up is the best party in NYC. Last year seemed to be a bit on the Electroclash/Techno vibe with the highlight being Derrick May and Francois K as the Cosmic Twins at the now legendary closing party. This year there is still a fair amount of Techno in the form of Josh Wink and Stacey Pullen, as well as Juan Atkins. Straight up Deep House is back with DJ Harvey, Tortured Soul live, as well as techier flavors like Darhsan from Metro Area, and other random noises from Gus Gus, Norman Jay, and Monolake. Beers, Sun, Art and the rest make P.S.1 a Saturday afternoon destination not to be missed.
Other summer happenings are a series of rooftop shindigs at Shelter. B.E.D. New York is also opening their rooftop for DJs and dinner. Another standby is the Cooper-Hewitt Museum Friday after work events. Booze and beats flow in the beautiful courtyard of the Cooper-Hewitt design museum every Friday after work starting July 8th. Turntables on The Hudson at the Frying Pan, an old boat that stays at the pier is always a fun summertime party (although unfortunately the nightlife police have been giving the venue a tough time so far this year). Other boat parties on the schedule are the 718 Sessions Boat parties with Danny Krivit (June 26), Liquid Sound Lounge with Jeannie Hooper and hopefully more on the way.
THE BAD – Crack Time!
One of the BADs in NYC clubland is the fact that there is so much to do that you often end up staying up much longer than you should. It can be rough but sleep, as that wise man said, is for amateurs. One interesting thing in this world of afterhours, and after-afterhours, and WMC-esque multiple day benders is that one’s watch becomes a bit of a hassle. The reason is because most watches only tell real time, not that other time zone true partiers get to live in every once in a while… that would of course be, Crack Time! So in an effort to help you all, we at The Good, The Bad, and The Messy have fashioned a convenient system for the conversion of Normal Human Time (NHT) to Crack Time (CKT).
Now in the life of your basic, hard core, true blue nightlifer, the weekend starts on or around Thursday. (Or occasionally Wednesday) A regular weekend may consist of a bar early on Thursday (umm… or Wednesday), followed by a party at a smaller venue or a lounge of some sort and then perhaps it is off to some small to mid-sized club to rock it into the early hours. Friday of course you try to get yourself together and start back up with bars and or lounges followed by some full on clubbing which of course leads to the inevitable afterhours, followed by the after-afterhours and then usually wandering around from spot to spot while your crowd dwindles to almost nobody and then magically it seems, reinforcements arrive and you are able to find more punters and another party or club. This process repeats itself until late, late Sunday morning, and usually wraps up Monday afternoon or maybe Tuesday morning (or umm… Wednesday).
So to transfer these Normal Human Times (NHT) to Crack Time (CKT) it requires a bit of finagling. First, a few basic guidelines… If it is Sunday afternoon in the real world on NHT then on CKT it is of course still Saturday night... if it is Monday morning NHT it is very LATE Saturday night CKT. If it is Thursday afternoon on NHT it is early Saturday night on CKT. Please note, Wednesday afternoon NHT is Monday morning CKT. Is it making sense yet? If yes, then good, you’ve obviously lived on Crack Time before. If not, take 2 of these and call me in the morning. Next Wednesday morning that is.
So you ask, when it is Tuesday afternoon CKT, what time is it in the real world in NHT? Nothing dumbass, there is no Tuesday afternoon in Crack Time. There is only Saturday night. Time to party! Bring on the CRACK!! Duh. And if it is not Saturday night, it is Monday morning. No party, no joy, no Crack.
So we hope this clears everything up for you. Next time you are at the after-afterparty and it looks pretty late, or very early, and you think maybe its time to go home and get some sleep, just refer to these handy guidelines and you will probably find that it is still Saturday night, so don’t sweat it. That is unless it is Monday morning, you fucking degenerate. Go Home!
THE MESSY
There have been a few extra special gems these past few weeks, the major one being the final Fundacion with Three and Sandra Collins joining Sasha for the final night of his residency. The party at Crobar was damn good, but the real messiness happened at the afterparty. Le Souk opened its doors at 8 AM for the official Fundacion wrap-up party where Three destroyed the place with the help of Sandra Collins, Astro&Glyde, Sean Cusick, DJ Swamy, and more. Some of us may have lost a few hours of their lives that day, but I am sure we enjoyed those never-to-be-remembered moments anyway.

Thievery Corporation dropped all sorts of multi-culturally influenced sounds with Dub, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Funk, House, Downtempo Grooves and more all mixed in for two special live gigs at Spirit which were simply phenomenal. They had an extremely impressive full band set-up including drums, DJs, Guitars, Bass, Horns, and a load of other goodies complemented by a seemingly never-ending stream of amazing vocalists. If you get a chance to see Thievery live, DO NOT pass it up.

Other biggies lately have been Wednesday nights at Le Souk for Boogie Nights which has been getting better and better every week, DJ Heather at Cielo with some loose-limbed acid-infused Chicago Jack-ness, Pete Moss & David Josephs bringing some fantastic House Music to Movida, a slightly naughty pool party with Benji Candelario & K1W1 at the new Hotel QT by Uma Thurman’s beau Andres Balazs, and of course techno-fiends rejoiced as Ritchie Hawtin worked it at Avalon.
Coming up, the not to be missed b-day bash for DJ Miss Honey Dijon at Cielo – Sunday, June 19 who will be joined by the one and only Derrick Carter should be fantastic. The Robots have two big bashes; their one year anniversary on Wednesday, June 22 with a special Francois K techno set should be wicked, and Damian Lazarus’ hotly anticipated return to NYC (July 6th) the following week for his Bugged Out ’Suck My Deck’ album release party which will surely bring out the heads. Finally July 4th weekend could be the messiest of the summer starting Thursday, June 30 with Marques Wyatt at Cielo, then the first P.S.1, and two gigs from the DJ who is as American as Disco Pie: Steve Porter, Saturday night with Eli Wilkie and Joe Mama at Sullivan Room, then at Cielo where he joins The Kid,
James Zabiela on Independence Eve – July 3rd.
