While artists like Daft Punk and Cassius first opened the door for French house music in the late 1990s, Paris'
PHIL WEEKS has been the one pushing it forward ever since. The founder of the cult record label Robsoul Recordings, a masterful producer, artist and remixer, and an outstanding house music DJ, PHIL WEEKS has rightly earned his place among the underground heavyweights around the world.
On
Saturday July 9th, PHIL WEEKS will be making his long-overdue New York City DJ debut in fine fashion, dropping his signature style of hypnotic house grooves at Basic NYC's bi-weekly Sullivan Room Saturday throwdown. This event is destined to be a "can't miss" for the true fans of underground sounds, and a rare opportunity to catch one of Europe's most in-demand names at the moment.
Phil's sound covers a vast spectrum of styles, but it all comes back to the primal jack that's at the core of all the best house cuts. His music focuses on the twisted electronic stomp and sinister acid elements that were the hallmarks of the early Chicago house trax, but washed over with a contemporary production touch. Deep and soulful vocals, Jazz-tinged swing-house and uprocking hip-house all finds its way into Phil's DJ sets, with his ultra-precise, crowd-energizing mixing tying everything together with ease.
You're also likely to hear some of Phil's productions and tracks from his label, Robsoul Recordings, making their way into the mix. Whether producing solo tracks, easily distinguished by Phil's spoken word vocals on cuts like "Mi Casa" and "Yeah, I Like That", or his co-productions with Hector Moralez as Fries & Bridges, Phil's music has been a staple of big-name DJs like Derrick Carter, Sneak, Heather and Mark Farina. And Robsoul has equally become a well-known name for supplying DJs with top-quality house tracks. The label's compilation, "Robsoul's Most Wanted", naturally mixed by Phil Weeks, has just been released.
Backing up Phil on the night will be New York’s own up-and-coming producer Danny Sullivan, responsible for some huge club tracks on the Hooj Choons and Low Pressings labels, and the local house crew Down Deep (aka Mike Prieto and Kevin Finn). Basic NYC residents Sleepy & Boo will round out the lineup for what promises to be an exciting night of hot house music.
