Finally, a large-scale and 'legal' clubbing destination in Brooklyn -- no, really there is one! There's been talk of the old Domino Sugar Factory being converted to a new large, live-event venue with a cabaret license for ages now, yet the only party we ever remember hearing about was Flavorpill.net's July 4th party last year. We wonder how that went... We'll never know because they don't have a message board like us cool kids. We rarely travel outside of Manhattan for clubbing but once in a while the call is just too strong, the buzz too loud, the proposition too exotic to resist; but the reality never lasts. We've seen the short-lived promised land that Volume professed to be never fully develop to its potential, and the Lunatarium's mixture of cultural pursuits with dance music hedonism was ultimately short lived.
Well this sugar shack might just be the place come Sunday. Situated just north of the Williamsburg Bridge, the former truck repair garage for the Domino Sugar Refinery on the East River is now a two-story, 14,000 square foot cabaret, bar, and restaurant with an open-air, 30,000 square foot Skydeck featuring sweeping views of the river, Williamsburg, and Manhattan’s midtown skyline. The club, designed by SHED studio (www.shedstudio.com) in collaboration with Freyer Collaborative Architects (www.freyerarchitects.com), is a complete renovation of the original garage into a custom designed steel, concrete, and glass gem - a rare find in a city of white minimalist boxes with décor fixtures. BK Sugar asserts itself as the beginning of a music, art, and culinary revolution just outside of Manhattan.
