Unread Sunday, Feb 25th 2007, 03:47 AM #1 Wink @ Shelter review
First, let me say Wink @ Shelter and not Wink & Loco because I left around 3:30 and I believe Loco was still in the air travelling to our fair city..I hope he landed and is in route.

Secondly...wow. S&B did a fantastic job opening (and I should know..I was there from the first record dropped) - wonderful mixture of techy, timewriter-ish house to chicago nasty to a touch of minimal tech ala pokerflat dopeness..all around well played and programmed.

Wink..damn. As someone from his management team said "He's a professional" and that is the absolute truth. Using everything from the EFX to his loop grabber...using the loop on the cdj 1000 to perfection - he utilizes every fragment he can and really makes an ordinary track something special. Lots of what I would call "minimal" but dirty, bassy stuff - not pots & pans. He progressed his set very nicely, some dirty acid house and techno - getting some bangers in there too - some even with a touch of melody for effect. I wasn't trainspotting but just taking in his creativity behind the decks..it was something to be witnessed.

Crowd was great...everyone was totally up for it. Got downstairs to hear Stadenco ripping it up like i knew he would be...all in all a spectacular night and I wish i had the energy to stay there b/c I know it was just on the verge of getting more beautifully insane.

Thanks to S&B, Made and everyone else involved.

cheers,

dj

really, i thought wink was boring, to much boom boom boom. Didnt seem interesting, very dull and monotnous. I'm quite the picky fucker though.

Sleepy n boo, lot of fun, i'm assum that was you two downstairs. I was quite sloshed, but i had more fun downstairs.

cheers

Yeah, I thought it was boring for the most part. He played something interesting every 45 minutes or so if I had to estimate. Actually, he did keep my interest by around 4:00 playing like I wished he had all along. I was really into the music at that point but I'd had enough being pushed around by the massive crowd that it wasn't enough for me to stick around. I did really like what I heard of Sleepy & Boo's set, albeit only the last 20 minutes or so...

I want to thank Sleepy and Boo for a fun time.
Door staff was great sorry the coat check closed down early but it was all good.

As for loco...I do not know how long the night went but I left at 430 and Loco dice was still not on the decks and that was really my motivation to be there along with Max telling me to come out .

Wink was technically on point but much of the time I was kind of take it or leave it over what I was hearing.

Joel ripped it apart down stairs on the other hand.

I agree.
At about 2:30 he started to drop some dope bangin beats like he used to...
That lasted for about 20 mins or so.
Then yea about every 30 mins he would drop 1 or 2 cool tunes, and just kept up the loopyness.
Crowd wise it was diverse but I liked it, nice vibe.
S&B, Standeco & that Billy dude played well

Ooooof!
What a night!!

We had a BLAST!
Opened up for Wink upstairs and got to see the room filling up slowly....that's always such a great experiece. Lots of fun playing up there Josh came on and did an amazing job...he's always fun to watch with the EFX and the Cycloops. Plus now he's not even using monitors - just mixing in his Shure earpieces. Wooot!!

Dice got to play the afterhours in the basement and he was rocking it down there. Nice tunes indeed - dubby, techy, housey stuff that got steadily more twisted. Wish we could have heard the whole set but my cold was getting to me

All the basement DJs did a great job. Joel really rocked it out down there...nice tracks as always Billy Disciple set things up nicely too. Sorry we didn't get to hear you Zack and Keryn but I know how you guys do

Thanks to Made for making the night happen and thanks to all our friends who came out!

I came to Shelter after leaving Johnny Fiasco at Love.

Pretty disappointed with how Fiasco's appearance there was kinda handled, so i left rather early into his set.

Showed up to shelter and had a great time. Wasn't nearly as trashed as I was when I saw Mr. Burridge play there, but the bass in that spot picked up the slack. Shelter's sound system is pretty good.

Sucks loco dice didn't get there on time... was kind of looking forward to him play after that awesome set at Cielo last thanksgiving.

Josh Wink had me going with those melodic bass loops. That stuff was real fun.

Heard some fine tunes over all. Some sweet big-room big-sound tracks.

I don't really like to pick shit out on DJs, especially because I'm no one special, but I caught some particularly nasty slip ups (like longer than 10 seconds of loud, bad ass trainwrecks) from Wink... but he did come off as being seemingly geniuinely sorry or feeling gulity of 'em-- I don't mind either way, but that's cool of him. Seems like a really nice humble dude.

Saw some familiar faces... met some new folks. Had a good time over all.

I was out at around 5AM. Good times.

so what time did dice get on? left around 5:30, couldn't really get much energy going after that time..

josh wink might be an amazing professional and all, and i really did have a good time listening to him (for once) but damn, how many trainwrecks did he pull?! i was stunned, counted at least 4 big ones while i was still sober.

edit: btw, nice meeting you eileen!
Oh.

wink sucked, shelter is a disaster as a venue. loco dice from 6-8am and the locals salvaged a pretty bad party for moi.
I'd known her for years. We used to go to all the police functions together. Ah, how I loved her, but she had her music. I think she had her music. She'd hang out with the Chicago Male Chorus and Symphony. I don't recall her playing an instrument or being able to carry a tune. Yet she was on the road 300 days of the year. In fact, I bought her a harp for Christmas. She asked me what it was.

coat check is crazy, the main room is dark and dirty, the lights upstairs are like strobe lights going off in your face, the bathrooms are disgusting, but at least the sound is good. and the basement is ok, warmer lighting helps the vibe there.
