Yes it is that time of the year again. Winter Music preview time. Like always it is here that you can find all the best parties and tips on how to do it right. This year The Good, The Bad & The Messy presents the most comprehensive list of partying styles to make the most of your WMC.

neglected to take his NAP upon arrival
gain unlimited booth entry, free admission to the parties as an official "Hangers-On", possible drink tickets or bottle access, and the slim potential to appear much more important than you actually areTHE GOOD: HOW TO
There are a number of different theories on how to properly enjoy WMC to the fullest extent. This year The Good, The Bad, The Messy would like to outline some of these different alternatives for making the mostest of the messiest.
Pick and Stick:
This plan is simple and straightforward but lacks flexibility. It also requires that you know what you like and are able to plan well in advance. Basically, the idea is to go to only one party per time slot. Now at Conference there are numerous time slots, but generally speaking the main ones are the day parties, the night parties, the afterhours, and of course, the after-afterhours. This plan requires you only pick one party in each slot and stick with it, from beginning to end.
The advantage of this plan is you get to enjoy each party in its fullness, from the early building up, to the peak time craziness, to the grand finales and all the DJs and artists along the way. One disadvantage is that you eliminate the opportunities to attend other parties at the same time. This could also be seen as a plus though since you will not have to worry about trucking it from one spot to another to another to another.
Smorgasbord Stylee:
This plan is all about indulging in as much and as many parties and DJs as possible. Basically you find all the parties you want to go to, and chances are in addition to days and mornings, each night will have 3, 4, or even a half dozen events you want to check out. So what the hell, why not hit them all. This takes a little more energy and may have higher costs but basically you will be able to experience every DJ you want, be rocking out at any hour of the day, and never be lacking in somewhere else to go.
The big risk for this style is that you do not want to miss the best moments of each party. It would be tragic if you left the AMOnly party 10 minutes before Hawtin gets wrestled out of the booth by security, or if you arrived just after Sander Kleinenberg finished up on the terrace at Space, or otherwise missed some memorable and magic moments that make each party legendary.
The Freestyle:
This is a risky but often rewarding technique which involves simply going wherever your heart, mind, and mates drag you. This involves being nimble on your feet and open to virtually any sounds at any time of day. Basically, it is simply following the party or more likely, the afterparty. The technique works because there is of course always something going on, and oftentimes it is fun and debaucherous so you can't really go wrong.
Variety is the Spice:
The theory behind this method is that since you are in Miami and there is such a great variety of music to choose from you should try to indulge in as many different genres as you can. Some techno, some house, some breaks, some trance, all the major food groups as Steve Porter would put it. You spend all your weekends at home listening to one style and going to the same parties and hearing the same DJs, now that you are in Miami, where the choices are endless, it is time to indulge in all that is available.

M.A.N.D.Y. The after-after-after party?
Outside Your Species:
This is similar to Variety is the Spice one but to a more extreme degree. This system insists you experience only those DJs and that music that you NEVER get to experience on a regular basis. This is slightly easier for people who come from places where the scene is not as saturated with big name DJs as NY or London but even folks from here and there probably do not get as much variety on a regular basis as they could. So if you are always seeing Techno you would avoid that and try to check out a Breaks party, some Deep House, or even go Trance out somewhere.
The wonderful part about this is finding some DJ from some genre you would not expect to like who actually plays some stuff that gets you grooving, or even dips into your favorite genre in his or her own specific way.
Can't Stop, Won't Stop:
This is a more extreme form of Miami fun which involves continual partying back to back to back to back to ba- you get the picture. Since there are so many great parties and afterparties and preparties it is of course well within the realm of possibility that you can simply move from one fun time to the next for as long as you retain consciousness. For example start at a an afternoon day party, rock it till it closes at 6ish, head to an evening sunset party until 10, find a club and rock it til prime time around 3AM, zip off to the late night club until 6, then find yourself on the terrace at any of the big clubs until 10AM, hit up someone's hotel room for some drinks until 2 and start all over with another day party.
Follow That DJ:
The really good DJs of course get booked at all sorts of parties throughout the course of conference and usually have opportunities to DJ in a wide variety of settings. One cool thing is that this presents a chance for the DJ to play a bunch of different styles. An after-hours set by any DJ will be different from a prime time set, just as an outdoor day set will be quite different from a big room huge club set. If they are a guest at a big party with loads of DJs they will play different than if it is their own party. If your favorite DJs get to spin in a lot of different situations following them around could in fact be rewarding. For instance Lee Burridge on the terrace at Space, at his own party in BED, in the main room at Nocturnal, and at some grimy little afterhours could be vastly different experiences. Or Mark Farina will probably mix up his style from his own party, to the Om party, to a pool party, to the various other gigs he does. Just don't follow the DJ back to his room or else you're just being a groupie.
Can't Move, Won't Move:
For all intents and purposes, it is quite possible to enjoy yourself for days at a time in Miami without ever moving from one spot. All you have to do is choose a good spot. For instance, if you decide to make camp at the Marlin Hotel you will see Mr. C, Three, Johnny Fiasco, Pete Bones, King Britt, Terry Lee Brown Jr., Jody from Way Out West and countless others throughout the week. Basic NYC follows this rule and has an endless stream of great parties and top DJs at the Beach Plaza Hotel including Robsoul's most wanted and the Smartbar 25th Anniversary. Or perhaps you want to be in a club, Nocturnal has pretty much around the clock action. Pawn Shop will certainly not disappoint and I know I spent at least 24 full hours there last year with nary a moment of boredom. So if you can pick a good spot, you could be set. Just know where the nearest bathroom is.
Kidnap that DJ:
This is a variation on Follow that DJ that we recommend only attempting with the help of a certified Trampa, those beautiful and vivacious party girls from Tampa. Basically, it involves selecting and then charming and then dragging a willing and malleable superstar DJ to whatever parties the Trampa feels like attending. The DJs will be sure to follow as the girls are more fun than anyone else in Miami. The only responsibility is that everyone is expected to help get the DJ to the next gig.
The advantage is of course, unlimited booth entry, free admission to the parties as an official "Hangers-On", possible drink tickets or bottle access, and the slim potential to appear much more important than you actually are. So if you can somehow endear yourself to a DJ or a Trampa (and are somehow able to keep up) then hang on for what will surely be a legendary party ride. Who knows, if you are extremely charming, know how to beat mix, and your DJ is a bit of a lush, maybe you'll even get to throw down a few records on the terrace at the Pawn Shop.

THE BAD: UNSCHEDULED
As fun-filled and wild as Miami is there is always something to complain about. So I figured I would bitch and moan about who is not going to be there. The roll call for those I have not seen or heard from but hope that they might still show up on some flyer are as follows...
Layo & Bushwacka!:
Oh How I miss the Dynamic DJ Duo.
Derrick Carter:
Miami without Boompt is like Peanut Butter without Jelly.
Laurent Garnier:
Will the great Frenchman return to America anytime soon?
2 Many DJs:
Miami always has too many DJs, too bad it doesn't have 2 Many DJs.
Basement Jaxx:
What have they been up to anyway?
Trentemoller:
The biggest name in music for the last year or so and no sign of
them yet.
Rest, Relax & Recover: with the Fairwinds renovating, the best daytime bash on the beach is off the schedule.
M3!:
The entire M3 conference is unfortunately not on this year, despite loads of great music provided last year. As a result, also missing this year is the Miami Master List. With no M3 there was no DJ Prince Miami Master List to look forward to and help you count down to the fun in the sun. Fortunately others tried to pick up the slack, but I still missed the weekly reminders that used to always appear every winter around the end of January with your weekly dose of newly scheduled parties and a reminder that you had one less week until the action.

Hawtin, Dice, Dear - How many DJs does it take topolish twiddle a knob?
THE MESSY: THE SCHEDULE
Ahhh yes, what to do, when to do it, and where to go. Those are the questions. Now we have the answers.
Please note: this schedule is in Crack Time (CRT). so if you are still up at 6AM Thursday morning Normal Human Time (NHT), it is still Wednesday night CRT. (More on Crack Time here)
