Deep Space enters its 4th year of adventures into future dub, spacey vibes, and abstract grooves featuring resident DJ François K. live on the mixing board with special guests for a month long celebration this April 2007.
Over the last four years, Deep Space has won numerous awards and international accolades as it has become a weekly musical and clubbing destination to share the love of “dub,” a vast, under-appreciated musical direction that can be heard in psychedelic rock and avant jazz as well as reggae, hip hop, pop, African, techno, funk, muzak, classical, salsa, Braz and house music. The unique, open atmosphere of the party stems from its musical origins as François K. states, “In keeping with the open-minded musical spirit that dub has fostered, we would like this party to be the kind of event where sounds of all origins will be played, not limited to one particular format but always sharing this common link of dub, whether improvised live at the mixing console or played from original recordings. Rather than using deafening sound levels and blinding lights our goal is to create an atmosphere that can enable both devoted dancers and laid-back listeners to equally enjoy the sounds we have come to love.”
The warm vibe and extended-family atmosphere is special to the Deep Space party and a welcome reprieve in New York City nightlife and its home base at Cielo, as François K. notes, “Cielo is the only space in NYC that is exactly conducive to doing the kind of party that Deep Space is, allowing you to do whatever you want, sit back and relax or dance your heart out, or just plain hang out.” Over the years, the Deep Space party has become a cornerstone of the Cielo programming and owner Nicolas Matar states, “It has been an honor for us to host such a unique event on Mondays with the legendary Francois K for the last four years. The party keeps evolving and getting better every week! I can see this lasting for many, many years to come!”
François K. is revered as the co-creator of New York City’s legendary dance party Body&SOUL, which is on a hiatus in New York City. He tours worldwide for not only his soulful house DJ sets, but also for his techno and dub mixes. Over the years he performed regularly at Studio 54, Paradise Garage, The Loft, Ministry of Sound, Sound Factory Bar, Twilo, Roxy and Club Yellow in Japan, to name a few. In great demand, François has gone into the studio to produce/remix recordings by Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Jimmy Cliff, Underworld, Eurythmics, Bunny Wailer, U2, Ashford & Simpson with Maya Angelou, the Smiths, Dido, Finley Quaye, Diana Ross, Cure, Mick Jagger, Fishbone, Talvin Singh, D Train, Erasure, Yazoo, Black Uhuru, Thomas Dolby, and Jah Wobble. In 2005 François was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame.
Deep Space Producer Erica Ruben is best known for her decade of work as Executive Producer of Central Park SummerStage. While running the performing arts festival, she created internationally attended events such as Body&SOUL, Annie Lennox’s first US appearance, “Marley Magic” the first concert featuring four generations of Bob Marley’s family, Parliament Funkadelic’s Mothership reunion, and Africa Fete.
Deep Space has been presented abroad at the Big Chill Festival (UK), Plastic People (UK), TDK Cross Central Festival (UK), Space Lab Yellow (Japan), Café Jamaica (Japan), Precious Hall (Japan), Phase (Japan), throughout France, in Berlin, Denmark, SONAR Festival in Barcelona and across the U.S. In 2004 Deep Space was nominated for “Best Club Night” by the internationally televised “DanceStar USA” awards. In 2005 & 2006 François K. won “Best Resident DJ Award” at the Club World Awards held in Miami. Deep Space was named “Best Party 2004” in Time Out New York. New York Magazine featured Deep Space in the “Best of New York 2006” issue. In 2005 Deep Space NYC Vol. 1, a compilation mixed by François K., was released on Wave Music’s imprint Deep Space Media to critical acclaim.
