So we sent an invite out to Mom and Dad and the rest of the NYC fam...so I think they're coming through for this

Mom's email read that she'll be "representing with a posse of greying groupies"
I love it!!

I just can't wait to see the look on her face when I say "This is my friend Manwhore and Silverbull would like to dance with you. You know about 'Da Bull, right?"

Here's a great article about all the DJs-at-museums in NYC this summer

http://www.nypost.com/seven/07282007...n_niemietz.htm

"For many devotees, the party actually starts on Friday, at the Cooper-Hewitt’s four-year-old Summer Sessions soiree, which runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays and is free with the design museum’s $12 admission.

“There’s not a big meat-market scene,” says Jonathan Schnapp, dancing in Andrew Carnegie’s former back yard. Schnapp, who likes to go to both P.S. 1 and Cooper-Hewitt events with friends Seong Kwon and Akiyo Arai, says he’s missed only one Summer Session all summer.

“There isn’t the baggage that comes with a club,” Kwon agrees, citing steep cover charges and selective guest lists as turnoffs. “You’re not a pariah if you don’t drink and you don’t go home at 4 in the morning and wake-up in the afternoon,” Kwon, a light drinker, adds."

Arai also likes the club fun without the club lifestyle. “This is a more healthy atmosphere. I like the grass, there’s no smoke, and I like the kids running around,” she says as a small team of toddlers has joined their dance circle. "

The exhibition that's going on right now at the Cooper-Hewitt looks really cool: Design for the Other 90%

http://other90.cooperhewitt.org/

Designers, engineers, students and professors, architects, and social entrepreneurs from all over the globe are devising cost-effective ways to increase access to food and water, energy, education, healthcare, revenue-generating activities, and affordable transportation for those who most need them. And an increasing number of initiatives are providing solutions for underserved populations in developed countries such as the United States.

Encompassing a broad set of modern social and economic concerns, these design innovations often support responsible, sustainable economic policy. They help, rather than exploit, poorer economies; minimize environmental impact; increase social inclusion; improve healthcare at all levels; and advance the quality and accessibility of education. These designers’ voices are passionate, and their points of view range widely on how best to address these important issues. Each object on display tells a story, and provides a window through which we can observe this expanding field. Design for the Other 90% demonstrates how design can be a dynamic force in saving and transforming lives, at home and around the world.

Check out this article from the NY Times about the Cooper-Hewitt parties. I hope we get some 70-year old ladies who like house!

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/03/ar...=1&oref=slogin

‘SUMMER SESSIONS’ When Jeannie Hopper was taking her first spin on the turntables in the garden of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum a couple of years ago, and a pair of 70-something women sidled over to her D.J. booth, she had a pretty good idea of what was coming. “I thought they were going to complain about the noise,” Ms. Hopper said. Turned out that they had a question, not a complaint. “The music is wonderful,” Ms. Hopper recalls them saying. “What do you call it?” It was that sort of open, inviting reception that persuaded Ms. Hopper to return to Cooper-Hewitt, this year as curator of their weekly Summer Sessions series. The event, led each Friday evening by a different D.J. of her choosing, draws about 700 people to the museum in a three-hour period. And while Ms. Hopper is eager to expose D.J.’s to a museumgoing audience, the museum is equally eager to draw on the loyal audience that turns up to hear a specific D.J., no matter the setting. “It’s an opportunity for us to reach a wider demographic,” said Laurie Olivieri, a spokeswoman for Cooper-Hewitt. “They have their own fan base who come up to the museum.” Last week the music fans, the museum’s regulars and people simply drawn in by the consistent thud of the bassline all migrated to the center of the lawn to dance. Even those languishing on blankets or exploring the “Design for the Other 90%” exhibition in the garden betrayed their interest with a gentle nod of the head or tap of the foot. They had all become part of the same crowd. (Fridays through Sept. 7, 6 to 9 p.m., Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, 2 East 91st Street, Manhattan, 212-849-8400, cooperhewitt.org. Free with admission: $12; $9 for students and 62+.) MONICA DRAKE
