So I heard somewhere along the way that if I save my receipts abroad that when I return to the USA I can get a tax refund? Anyone know of this? Where and how do I do so? I leave in one hour so a quick response would be appreciated mucho!

Yes.

This is very common in Europe Go for it! Look for the "Tax-Free Shopping" display in shop windows.

Here are some instructions

you can get the sales tax that you pay abroad refunded to you.

i've never done it, but i think that you need to take care of it at the airport before you leave whatever country you're leaving.

No you can send it in later. You just need to make sure you get it stamped by the authorities at the airport

I've only done VAT return in the UK, but the minimum spend amount was usually set by the store where you are buying. Selfridges in London has a minimum spend of 50pds before you can get the paperwork required for a refund (total amount, not necessarily on 1 item). From what I remember many other clothing stores (Topshop, MNG) have much lower amount reqs.

One thing to keep in mind is that the stores/govt deduct a fee for the service, so by the time you get your money back it is a much smaller amount than 17.5% (UK VAT). You'll have to decide for yourself if the amount you will get back is worth the wait at the airport to process the paperwork, etc. You'll also need to get your paperwork signed before you check your luggage, in case they ask to see the items you are claiming refund for.

Also -- it is not just a matter of saving your receipts. You have to ask for the VAT refund paperwork from the store when you are purchasing the item/s. I think they even ask to see your passport (I can't remember for sure). They then fill part of the paperwork out there and then you bring the paperwork, your receipts and the items to the VAT desk at the airport to get stamped. If possible, I usually just get the money refunded to me in cash at the airport. In January at LHR the customs officers even paid me the equiv. in US dollars so I wouldn't have to do any currency exchange.
