Minimoo's response to the fair and seemingly accurate story by the New York Times seems catty. This is all covered in the minitek thread.

This is amazing, I don't think any other techno promoter in US had a huge article about them in NYT before. This is big! I'm very jealous...

Agreed!

This is some quality exposure right there...and it's more evidence that Minitek has managed to capture people's interest in a pretty significant way.

The NY Times rarely gives any coverage to straight clubbing or DJ events...but maybe now they will

I'm forwarding the article to Mike's dad. He used to write/edit for the Times and gets a big kick out of reading about "that DJing stuff"

i totally agree. you think they'd be a little happier that they got an article in the times. it can only help ticket sales anyway.

Exactly. How does Minimoo et al. see this article as 'impartial' and 'twisted'? What did the writer 'get wrong'?

IS it the '5000' comment? Well, to be honest 5000 people for a electronic music festival that is centered on minimal is kinda high, no?

With a response like this:

this sure will be the last time they get an article in NYT.

Sounds like Minitek is going all Minimal on PR (as in Public Relations and also Press Relations)

I have gotten the vibe that they are coming up short on ticket sales, and Tuesday's ticket sales were about them running low on money and struggling.

So, I will go, support, have a blast, and hope there's a follow-up Minitek.

I know how frustrating it can be to spend a lot of time with a reporter, and to have an expectation that an article is going to turn out a certain way...only to open up the paper and find absolutely nothing of the sort printed.

That said, I never had an article in the New York Times though

And in this case, I would say bad press is better than no press...and I do think that overall the article is not that bad at all.

Although to your first point...Mangum PR (their agency for minitek) is one of the more established ones here in NYC for music stuff

The article is not bad whatsoever. This has nothing to do with not getting the article they expected and everything to do with the apparent fact that this Jenny Tan girl (or whoever wrote that response) didn't actually read the damn article.

I find that response by minimoo really baffling and, quite frankly, amateurish.

Bill Clinton once had a great quote: "You never pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel." I think that really applies here.

EDM music already has a major problem in trying to get into the pages of the city's major media outlets, so I don't see the wisdom in shitting on a story in the city's so-called paper of record.

If you don't like the story it's prudent to keep it to yourself or directly contact the author because, at the end of the day, the story is still free advertising and beneficial to the success of the event.

The next time there is an EDM festival the editors at the Times arts and entertainment desk will certainly be more hesitant to spend their limited resources covering the event, if they read these types of public responses from ungrateful promoters.

Finally, I didn't find the article negative at all. In the third paragraph it states:

"The D.J. lineup is impressive: more than 40 from around the world, including superstars like the Canadian innovator Richie Hawtin; M.A.N.D.Y., the Berlin duo; and the indie favorite Matthew Dear. It is an ambitious undertaking, offering not only music but also new technology, art installations and workshops in hopes of attracting a broader audience."

That sounds like and endorsement of the line-up to me.

Why the hell would you look for such publicity for an underground party?

If you're throwing illegal parties the last thing you want to do is talk to the press.

I had some friends in SF get written up for their place, the Tenderloft(RIP), and they freaked out. They had no idea it was going to happen and it put them in hibernation mode for a while.

It seems like minimoo expected the Times to write a puff piece on them and are upset because the article isn't just a PR dick-sucking.

we didnt look. they showed up and asked if they could interview us about underground parties and the terms were they couldn't use the name of the party or the address. those terms were not kept. we ended up getting evicted anyway so some williamsburg luxury condos could go up so it was only a matter of time.

they should spend less time writing responses to NYT articles and more time disseminating critical information about event logistics IMO
