You would go to a coney island to get a coney dog. To complete the Michigan experience, finish off with a glass of vernors or faygo (preferrably faygo orange or faygo red).
A Coney Island, in Detroit, is a hot dog with chili (sans meat or beans) with mustard and diced onions on top served on a slightly toasted bun.

In Chicago, i understand it is slightly different, but i forgot what the Chicagoans told me.

I did want to try the, brewed in Detroit, Ghetto Blaster. Which i understand is a dark and heavy beer, but for some reason the thought of this did NOT appeal to me at Old Miami, where i saw it served.

Having had both a Detroit Coney Island, and a Nathan's from the Coney Island location. I would say Detroit doesn't have shit on Nathan's.

I grew up in Detroit. I've never heard the food called a "coney island", but instead a 'coney dog'. Detroit has diner like estblishments referred to as "coney islands" (Kirby's Coney Island, National Coney Island, etc.). I definitely know what it entails, by any name. They rock!

Now thats an apples and oranges comparison. You would have to go to the signature establishment for Coney Islands (I couldn't even tell you what that is) OR go to any average Nathan's (like the one by MSG). Based on the latter (I can't comment on the original Nathan's, never been), give me an average coney dog over an average nathan's any day.

The Coney that I had which was at the Plaka Diner (or maybe Cafe) in Greektown. It reminded me of a Texas Wiener, which is more of a NJ thing, although i understand it is in PA as well, which i would order sans onions and with cheese sauce. *drool*

a - you are right on the first point. you go to a coney island to have a coney. since i moved to ny i just call them coney islands just like i call coke "soda" now.

b - you are right on this point as well.

I had 2 hot dogs at Gowanus Yacht Club on Saturday if that counts.

If so, you can also put LakerLover down for 1 hot dog (bunless), Jaybee down for 1 cheeseburger, Sug down for 1 hot dog and 3/4 kielbasa and Ruthie the dog down for 1/4 kielbasa.

I hear La banquise on Rachel St near Parc Lafontaine has the best Poutine, plus it is open 24 hrs a day.
