Old Thursday, Dec 10th 2009, 10:55 PM #1 Best of the '00s: Justin Carter | Mister Saturday Night New Years Eve w/ John Tejada
Justin Carter was raised on Nickelodeon and Nintendo. This developed (or undeveloped as it were) his attention span, which affords him the ability to float through numerous interests in his life. He is a writer, a DJ, a foodie, a museum and theater enthusiast, a producer of events, and one of two brains behind New Release with Eamon Harkin. A member of the Nublu family, Justin launched the much-loved Lower East Side musical institution’s record label. He held the Music Director position at Manhattan’s hallowed music venue APT for two years; and he is a music director and weekly resident at outdoor parties The Beach Party and Sunday Best, both well known summer institutions in New York City. As a DJ he’s played alongside Moodymann, David Byrne, Nicky Siano and Larry Heard at events ranging from underground loft parties—like his semi-regular, semi-secret Easy Lover loft with DJ Probus—to large live music and DJ events--like Mister Saturday Night, an event that brings the best of live and DJed music together at venues around New York. This month Justin Carter takes to the Mister Saturday Night decks twice with some very special guests. On Saturday, December 12 he will be playing alongside Eamon Harkin and very special guest John Tejada. And on December 31, the two bring a special New Years Eve edition of Mister Saturday Night with special guest Omar S.

Best clubbing trend of the 00s
Dance music's escape from actual clubs.

Worst clubbing trend of the 00s
Bottle service, obviously. But this really fits into the larger streamlining and business-ification of clubs. When the majority of people owning and running clubs stopped being the people that really care about music inside them, things started to go downhill quickly.

Best track of the 00s
How can you pick one? I am still in love with Move D's 'Got Thing' after a couple years. We'll go with that one.

Best summertime anthem
Tim Sweeney played Bumblebee Unlimited's Lady Bug at the end of his Sunday Best set this year, and it was THE perfect summertime song.

Best NYC clubbing moment of the ‘00s
An impromptu performance of Freaky MF with Egyptian Lover on 808 and Moodymann on vocals at Mister Saturday Night.

Album of the decade
Easy. Kid A.

Best Producer
Kenny Dixon, Jr. Best in the 90s and best in the 00s

Best Global Club
No idea.

Best U.S. Club
Cielo -- specifically on Monday nights for Deep Space

Best Festival
I'll be the only one to say this on here for sure, but the best festival I ever went to was the Folks Fest in Lyons, Colorado. For any dance music fans who can also get down with Americana, check it. Beautiful locale, and a utopian vibe.

Best Record Label
I've bought nearly everything that's come out on Innervisions since it's started.

Most embarrassing club moment
Luckily I've not yet been embarassed at a club.

Best Fan Moment
When my mom offered to try to get me a gig in San Francisco.

Best DJ software
DJ and software should not go in the same sentence.

Best studio software
How about hardware?

Best or Worst piece of gear that changed DJing forever
Serato. I despise it.

Best "One More Tune" (encore) Track
If You Want Me To Stay by Sly and the Family Stone

Best clubbing destination
Sunday Best, of course!

Best Airport
LGA. It's so close to my house...

Best Airline
Haven't found one I love yet, just one that gives me points for using my credit card.

Best Hotel
The Ace. Right here in New York City.

Best After-Party
Rubulad is always the place to go after the regular club gigs

Highlight of 2009
See best clubbing moment of the 2000s

Lowlight of 2009
I'm a pretty optimistic guy. Most of the time when something bad happens, it teaches me some kind of lesson, and I end up appreciating the experience. But if I must pick, how about the fact that Mad Men Season Three ended with Season Four not scheduled to start until next summer? The is a bummer from which no lesson can be gleaned.

NYE gig (Club, City)
Mister Saturday Night, Brooklyn with Eamon Harkin and Omar S

Surefire NYE track
It's a secret!

Plans to detox after NYE
Running The Paris Marathon on April 11. Training from now until then... Detox has already begun

New Year’s Resolution
Patience

Clubbing predictions for 2010 and beyond
A slow rise in dance music's popularity among the general music enthusiast

Plans for 2010
Get married! And buy more records...

isnt it as sad reflection on the state of partying when cielo gets vote for best club (here, and on RA)??

bottle service,
gigs for wack / washed up djs
shockingly over zealous security
(the toilet attendant looking into the cubicles while people are in there!) i really couldnt relax in the place.

its just depressing because there is no reason why this club could not sucessfully promote good house & techno every night instead of trying to appeal to rich squares and be cool at the same time.

i really hope to see a return of some hardcore hedonism to NYC in the future couldnt find it anywhere i looked on my last trip!!!
