There's a new funk in town. Spotted first in Brooklyn, catching fire on its way thru the borough, the latest 'best kept secret' found its home at the South African speakeasy-meets-exposed-brick-and-bulb industrial decor that is Shebeen - a cozy corner in Nolita - with plenty of comfy seats, room to practice your dance moves, sip on booze and shoot the sh*t with your crew or compliment the ladies.. So tell your friends! But shshsh.. look out - don't talk to strangers - you don't want to spoil the fun.
Originally, shebeens were operated illegally, selling home-brewed and home-distilled alcohol and providing patrons with a place to meet and discuss political and social issues. Shebeens also provided music and dancing, allowing patrons to express themselves culturally, which eventually helped give rise and support the musical genre kwaito. They represent a sense of community, identity, and belonging.
Now back in NYC, Bagpak Music brings you an eclectic Bi-Weekly mix of deep & dirty funk, loose jazz & boogie-ish beats with DJs Yellowtail, Zero Chaser, Zhill and occasional guest selectas dropping by..
